Agent rules out Owen move

United's protracted summer pursuit of Bayern Munich midfielder Owen
Hargreaves looks to have come to an end, according to the player's
agent, but not in the manner the Reds had hoped.
The 25-year-old England international's representative, Roman Grill, has
been quoted as saying there is “no chance” of a deal now being settled
between United and the German champions, despite Hargreaves' insistence
on a move to the Premiership.
Grill told the Daily Star: "There is no chance of the deal taking place.
We have to accept there is no way Bayern will allow this transfer to happen.
"We did everything we could to grant Owen his wish to play for Manchester
United but his only hope is that, if United remain interested in him, the
deal could happen at a later date."
Sir Alex Ferguson had been keen to add the energetic Canadian-born player to
his midfield as the final preparation for the new season. Hargreaves' vigour
and drive would have been the perfect foil to the vision and creativity of
Michael Carrick or Paul Scholes.
Grill’s comments will come as a blow to the Reds, who had devoted
significant energy into bring Hargreaves to Old Trafford, having admitted
lodging an interest with Bayern for the midfielder’s services before the
World Cup. It remains to be seen whether Sir Alex will now turn his
attentions to another target.
It appeared likely that Hargreaves would get the move he craves following
the Bundesliga club’s capture of Holland international Mark van Bommel for
￡8million from Barcelona. However, Bayern's general manager Uli Hoeness,
who has been resolute throughtout the discussions that they would not sell,
said: "We want to move forward with Mark and Owen. We would be crazy to sign
van Bommel as a replacement for Hargreaves." Instead they see the Dutchman
as a replacement for Michael Ballack, who joined Chelsea on a free earlier
in the summer.
United have been linked with a move for a striker, with the agent of Juventus
forward David Trezeguet telling the Daily Mail: "I believe there is an option
with United."
The Reds have until midnight on Thursday to complete any deals ahead of the
transfer deadline.
