Manchester United turned down the opportunity to sign Argentine midfielder
Javier Mascherano on two occasions during the summer.
On Thursday, Mascherano, 22, and striker Carlos Tevez, 22, signed for West
Ham from Corinthians of Brazil on permanent deals for undisclosed fees.
"We were never interested in Tevez," United chief executive David Gill told
BBC Five Live's Sportsweek programme.
"We were also offered Mascherano but we didn't want to go for him."
Gill added: "We were offered Mascherano for a significant sum at the
start of the summer and also last week on a loan deal.
"We had watched him last season but the manager and his staff didn't
want to pursue him.
"While he is clearly a very good player it was decided he wasn't required
at the club."
Meanwhile, Gill remains upbeat over the chances of a new contract for striker
Wayne Rooney.
England international Rooney, 20, wants to extend the six-season deal he
signed when he joined United in August 2004.
"His eagerness to sign a long-term deal is great," said Gill. "I think there
will be developments over the next few months.
"We want to tie him down to the club."

United had intended to bring Owen Hargreaves into their midfield this
summer but were frustrated as Bayern Munich refused to sell.
Nevertheless, Gill has confirmed that United are still interested in the
England man, indicating that they could still have a chance of signing
him in January.
"Owen was on record as being very interested in coming to us and we were
clearly very interested in Owen," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.
"He is a player we have had on the list for quite a while, actually.
"Obviously Bayern were very keen - and are very keen - to keep him. We
will have to see.
"If that situation does not change, then obviously we will not acquire
Owen.
"But Bayern have indicated to me that they will let us know if the
situation changes and at that point, we hopefully can consummate a deal.
"These things do not just happen on January 1, one has discussions around
the year on these particular transactions."

有人將他提給我們，問我們是否感興趣，上賽季，我們一直觀察著他，世界盃上也是這
樣，在夏季轉會窗口開啟的時候，有人把他向我們推薦了，不過轉會費不菲。」

與此同時，曼聯俱樂部表示，仍然有可能在明年一月份的時候去求購拜仁的英格蘭
中場哈格裡夫斯，後者非常想來曼聯，但由於合同的限制，只能留在拜仁。吉爾說：「
實際上，哈格裡夫斯在我們的考察名單上已經很久了，顯然拜仁非常非常想留住他，我

對於在夏季轉會中只收穫了兩名球員，而賣出了范尼等人，曼聯的球迷們自然會有
些不滿，對此，吉爾安撫說：「我們完全可以理解球迷們的失望情緒，他們認為我們應
該在轉會市場上變得更活躍一些。不過我們清楚，球隊現有的陣容已經很有實力，我們
引進球員的原則必須是加強陣容，而不是為了買進而買進。」
另外，曼聯現在還在忙著另一項工作，和魯尼續約。20歲的魯尼目前和曼聯的合同
是六年，已經效力了兩年，不過即使還有四年才到期，但曼聯已經表示了和他簽新合同
的願望。吉爾說：「他是我們的一名關鍵球員，他也很想簽一份長期合同。我認為，在
未來的兩三個月裡，我們將在這方面有進展。我們要坐下來，讓他更長時間留在曼聯，
這對我們很重要，他也願意。」
另外，在轉會切爾西後，阿什利-科爾方面也透露，阿森納本來不想將他賣到同城死
敵藍軍，而是想讓他去曼聯，但是他予以了拒絕，因為他無法想像在那裡的未來。科爾
的一個朋友透露：「德恩(阿森納俱樂部副主席)的態度很友好，他對科爾說，我們仍然
想留住你。不過科爾真的想走，於是德恩說，他們會試圖將他賣到曼聯或者紐卡斯爾。」
「不過科爾不想去曼聯，因為那裡有海因策等多名左後衛了，他告訴德恩，他仍然
想去切爾西，並且希望盡快運作，最終轉會能夠成行，他個人也感到鬆了一口氣。」
