It wasn't a happy night for all the British sides however. Darren Fletcher
was in the Scotland side soundly beaten 3-0 in the Netherlands; goals by
Huntelaar of Real Madrid, Van Persie of Arsenal and Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt
extended the Dutch's lead in Group 9. Fletcher and co will now hope for a
home win over Iceland on Wednesday in order to regain second spot. The eight
best runners-up in the nine European qualifying groups go into the play-offs;
the winners of these join the group leaders at South Africa 2010.

Rooney netted twice in the last 20 minutes as England beat Slovakia 4-0 in a
friendly; Ben Foster played the second half in goal as substitute for David
James and Michael Carrick enjoyed a late cameo after replacing Peter Crouch
in the 74th minute. Another sub with United connections, former Reds
midfielder David Beckham, made history with his 109th international
appearance - he's now England's most capped outfield player.
Rio Ferdinand was absent from the action, however; the United defender was
ruled out on Friday with back and groin complaints. Hopefully he will be fit
to face Aston Villa next weekend.
