This summer’s European Championships could have a significant bearing
on United’s 2004/05 campaign – but Sir Alex is nevertheless hoping
for English success in the tournament.
Ferguson is acutely aware that the further the likes of England,
France and Holland progress in this summer's Euro 2004 tournament,
the more of an impact it will have on his preparations for next season.
With five of Ferguson’s squad possibly involved – Scholes, Butt, the
Nevilles and Wes Brown – success at Euro 2004 for England would
necessitate a reshuffle to the United boss’s pre-season plans.
But, despite his Scottish roots, Fergie says it is important England
in particular perform well in Portugal - for the good of the domestic
game.
"I hope they do well, I really do,” he says. “It would be great for
the English game. It's come to the time in international football where
England need to make their mark. “Domestically, clubs have made very
good progress. Chelsea have done fantastically well this season.
”Each year we get closer to that consistent success in Europe and there
is no reason why the international team, with players like Gerrard,
Scholes, Beckham, Owen and Rooney, can't go far.
"That would give me a problem [if England got to the final]. That would
mean they wouldn't be back to train with us until 2 August; meaning they
would go straight into the pre-season tournament. But that would only
give me nine days before the Champions League qualifier."
The European Cup qualifier – the first of two legs on 11 August –
is the thorny issue for Sir Alex.
"It's going to be about arranging when my players come back from the
European Championships,” he said. “I normally give my players a 28-day
rest after coming back from European Championships. If England were
to get to the final we would have a problem."
It may seem, then, that the Vodafone Cup, announced yesterday for the
3 and 5 August, puts unnecessary pressure on the players, who have
international commitments and a three-game return to the US in July.
However, Sir Alex’s stance is markedly different. "We are going to
need matches in pre-season,” he insists. “Normally we have six games
prior to the beginning of the season. We have three games in America,
two in the Vodafone Cup, that makes five. The Community Shield would
be an important one if we get there. We also have the qualifiers of
the Champions League.
"We have a tight schedule and there is no disputing that. It is going
to take good management and we have a lot of organising to do in terms
of who is going to be playing where, and when they can play. A lot
depends on how far teams go in the European Championships."
