Sven Goran Eriksson has revealed Alan Smith rejected the chance to
link-up with the England squad following Andy Johnson's injury.

The Swede overlooked the Manchester United man in his original squad
to face Denmark on Wednesday, but made the call after being informed
Johnson had a hamstring strain.

Eriksson wanted Smith in his squad although the firebrand striker has
preferred to remain with United and get a 90-minute run-out under his belt.

"Andy Johnson is injured. I picked him but was told he had a hamstring
injury," explained Eriksson.

"Alan Smith should have been in, but he has played little football and
wants to play in the reserves on Tuesday and have 90 minutes." 

Meanwhile, Eriksson has his preferred starting eleven picked, but is
waiting to see if they recapture their form of last season before putting
them on his team sheet.

"If I had to pick my team now, I know the 11 players I would play, if they
have a season like last season," he added.

"A lot of things can change, new players coming in, maybe some of them
not playing as well as last season."

Results are the bread and butter of international football, but Eriksson
is keen for his charges to shine against Denmark when they go head to head
on Wednesday evening.

"I hope we get a good performance in Copenhagen but I'm very keen to see
the players and talk to them.

"We have to prepare for September and October. That's extremely important
for us."

不過，另一前鋒阿蘭史密斯卻要求領隊Eriksson不要選他入隊。

Eriksson指，Alan表示自己比賽狀態不足，情願於下周二曼聯預備組的賽事中上陣。


英格蘭現時於世界杯分組賽中排名第二，以兩分落後波蘭，不過少打一場。

九月三日，英格蘭將於卡地夫與威爾斯決戰，四天後作客北愛爾蘭，十月回到主場迎戰奧
地利及波蘭。

Alan Smith scored United's opener in a 3-0 win over Bolton as the Reds began
the defence of their Premier Reserve League crown on Monday night.

Wes Brown, who partnered Spanish youngster Gerard Pique in central defence,
completed an hour of the game to aid his recovery from an Achilles injury.

Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick has warned Manchester
United striker Alan Smith his England career could be in jeopardy.

Smith, 24, rejected a late call-up to England's squad for the friendly
against Denmark in Copenhagen, opting instead to play for United's reserves.

Barwick said: "Alan Smith was given an opportunity to play for England and
chose to play elsewhere 

"It's probably not the cleverest thing he's done." 

Smith has not been picked for an England squad by coach Sven-Goran Eriksson
for 13 months after he was sent off against Macedonia in October 2002.

The ￡7m capture from Leeds claimed he wanted to improve his fitness by
playing a full 90 minutes for United's reserves, rather than sit on
England's bench in Copenhagen.

Barwick said: "I think Sven wanted him in the squad and Alan wanted to get
some football in his legs.

"Sven will pick the next squad and the one after that so he'll have plenty
of opportunity to either pick Alan Smith or not."

Smith scored the opening goal as United's second string beat Bolton 3-0 at
Lancaster.

Ronaldo injury reveal as sprained ankle

LISBON (AFP) - Manchester United's star winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been
sidelined from Portugal's international football friendly against Egypt on
Wednesday because of a sprained ankle.

Team doctor Henrique Jones had initially told a news conference Monday he
expected the 20-year-old Portuguese player would recover in time for the
match to be played on Portugal's mid-Atlantic Azores archipelago.

But after a talk with the player Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari decided
to spare Ronaldo from the match "to protect his physical condition", the
Portuguese Football Federation said in a statement.

Portugal play Luxembourg in a 2006 World Cup qualifier on September 3.

The Euro 2004 vice-champions lead Group Three with 20 points from eight
matches, ahead of Slovakia on 17.

小小羅受困腳踝繼續傷停


    曼聯隊葡萄牙中場球星克裡斯蒂亞諾·羅納爾多因為腳踝扭傷而告別週三葡萄牙國家
隊為備戰世界盃預選賽而與埃及國家隊將在阿索雷斯進行的一場友誼賽。

　　儘管小小羅納爾多本人非常希望參加國家隊的比賽，但是葡萄牙隊主教練斯科拉裡從
愛護球員的角度出發還是讓他留在曼徹斯特休養。上週末開戰的新賽季首輪英超聯賽，小
小羅納爾多就因為傷病而沒有在曼聯與埃弗頓的比賽中間亮相。與他同時告別國家隊的還
有里斯本競技隊的中場新人卡斯特羅，此君因為右膝傷痛，放棄了首次為成年國家隊出場
的機會。

    在上述兩人均因傷退出國家隊訓練營之後，斯科拉裡招入了葡萄牙國內布拉加隊的阿
爾維斯和英超富勒姆隊的博阿-莫特作為頂替者。目前葡萄牙隊在006年世界盃預選賽歐洲
區第3小組中以3分優勢排名榜首，在小組賽還剩下四輪的情況下，葡萄牙極有希望以小組
第一直接拿到明年去德國的門票，他們將在9月3日主場迎戰下一個對手盧森堡。
