Old Trafford Delivers Fitting Tribute To Best
(雖然不能看到比賽,但可以讀這篇詳盡的報導
感受跨越世代的曼聯人如何一起懷念George Best
光看文字就很感動 大家記得的果然如Best自己所說
還是他的足球)
Old Trafford delivered an amazing tribute to one of its greatest
footballing legends, the late George Best, before and during the match
with West Brom on Wednesday.
The minute's silence was immaculately observed with fans
holding up posters to bathe Old Trafford in a sea of Best pictures
and a sombre quiet.
David Meek, who has worked as a local journalist and covered United
for over 40 years, introduced the minute's silence
and said that silence was an appropriate way to mark the passing
of "someone very close to the club".
Sir Alex Ferguson and Bryan Robson led both sets of players
onto the pitch carrying floral tributes. The teams then stood near
the halfway line facing the East Stand.
Club dignitaries, first team players including Ruud van Nistelrooy,
Ole Solskjaer and Ryan Giggs, members of the 1968 European Cup-winning team
and the West Brom side against whom Best made his debut in 1963
faced towards the Stretford End.
There were tears shed among many of the former players
and a touching moment when Gary Neville, captain for the night,
embraced Best's ex team-mate Nobby Stiles at the end of the minute's tribute.
Fans will be able to show their affection for George
with a minute's applause before the Premiership meeting with Portsmouth
on Saturday evening (Kick off 17:15 GMT).
But Wednesday's silence was a moving and emotional occasion.
Throughout, a message on the electronic advertising boards
around the perimeter of the pitch eloquently summed up Best's influence
on the club.
It read: "George Best (1963 - 1974) 470 appearances, 179 goals, 1 genius."
Sir Alex Ferguson had set the tone in his programme notes.
"It is ironic that Albion should be our first fixture at Old Trafford
since George passed on," he said, alluding to Best's United debut
against West Brom in 1963, aged just 17.
"He was a special player who says he wants to be remembered
for his football, which is not difficult because he gave such great joy
to the game. He has left us a million memories, all of them good."
In the second half in particular United's supporters sang George's name
throughout, including a 20-minute version of
"We all live in a Georgie Best world", an adaptation of
the Beatles' classic 'Yellow Submarine'.
On Saturday a delegation representing United, including Sir Alex,
David Gill and some senior players not involved in the Portsmouth game
later that day, will attend Best's funeral in Belfast.
There will then be a minute's applause at before the Premiership match
with Portsmouth, which kicks off at 17:15 GMT.
