It will be all change at Crewe when Manchester United start their Carling Cup
campaign on Tuesday night.
Sir Alex Ferguson plans to rest most of his stars and field a side made up of
talented youngsters, first-team fringe players and those seniors short of
match practice, for the trip to Gresty Road.
Dario Gradi's Championship side stand between the Reds and a place in
the competition's fourth round and even though Sunday's Premiership game
against Arsenal was uppermost in his mind, Ferguson has been planning
his approach to the cup tie during the weekend.
"All the young players will be playing and by that I mean a selection of
Darren Fletcher, David Bellion, Jonathan Spector, Chris Eagles and
Kieran Richardson and the likes. I will just decide the rest of it by
looking at the ones who need a game," he said.
The Carling Cup may not rate highly on United's list of priorities,
but Ferguson feels it is important to get beyond their opening game.
"You obviously want to progress in the competition and give players a game,
so the League Cup could be quite useful for us."
Ferguson says he is contemplating giving last season's first-choice keeper
Tim Howard the opportunity to play a competitive game and will choose between
the American and Spanish international Ricardo.
