Always had to be on his guard with the game on a constant knife-edge and made
a few timely interventions
John O'Shea - 6
Had looked solid and depenedable in all aspects until his night's work was
ended prematurely when his hamstring went
Wes Brown - 5
Had the responsibility of filling in for Vidic but looked nervy and struggled
in the air a fact which led to Marseille's goal
Patrice Evra - 6
Skipper for the night in Vidic's absence and led the backline well and limited
his forward forays as Reds' nerves crept in
Chris Smalling - 6
Another valuable step along the learning curve. Had a few wobbly moments but
stood up to the task well overall
Paul Scholes - 9
Brought all of his class, experience and composure to bear as he shored up
the Reds's engine room to great effect
Michael Carrick - 7
Neat, unfussy and tidy in everything he did. The England midfielder also
proved a perfect foil to Scholes across the middle
Nani - 5
Quickfire return after his horror injury but carried none of the swagger or
belief that had marked his form prior to Anfield
Ryan Giggs - 6
Some trademark flashes of inspiration and set up the crucial second goal to
help soothe United's worried brows
Javier Hernandez - 8
Got the night off to a perfect start with his early strike and movement and
pace caused chaos before his match-winner
Wayne Rooney - 9
Has really got his mojo back. Some of his passing and vision was breathtaking
and was at the hub of all United's best work
