Raul misses Man Utd tie
Real Madrid will be missing striker Raul while Manchester United
expect Juan Sebastien Veron to return when the two clubs meet for
their Champions League tie on Wednesday.
Raul scored twice in Real's 3-1 first leg victory but will be absent
for the return after undergoing surgery for acute appendicitis.
The 25-year-old was rushed to hospital for an emergency appendectomy
on Monday after complaining of fever and severe pain at the club's
training ground.
"The way things have happened is a surprise, but we are professionals
and we can't start crying about it," said Real Madrid coach
Vicente del Bosque.
"There is no doubt it is a big loss, but this squad is big enough to
still do well in Old Trafford and all we can do is hope he recovers
as quickly as possible."
Madrid captain Fernando Hierro added: "What I want us to do now is
get past Manchester to dedicate him the win. I hope we qualify and
that he can help us is the next round if possible."
Brazilian striker Ronaldo has shrugged off the effects of a bruising
Spanish league encounter with bitter rivals Barcelona at the weekend
and will travel to Manchester.
And Del Bosque could partner Ronaldo with Guti in attack or bring in
Santiago Solari in a five-man midfield.
Meanwhile, United boss Ferguson should have Argentine playmaker
Veron to call on and lessen the blow of losing Paul Scholes through
suspension.
Veron has been undergoing intensive treatment on a knee
ligament injury which has kept him out since 5 March.
Right-back Gary Neville is also banned and Wes Brown is set to
replace him at right-back with Phil Neville also an option.
Defender John O'Shea has a knee problem but could be risked along with
goalkeeper Fabien Barthez who came off with a thigh injury at half-time
in Saturday's win against Blackburn.
Nicky Butt should shrug off a minor leg knock to play.
