Van der Sar - The Dutchman had little serious action to worry about as Roma
were largely reduced to long shots, but he allowed Vucinic's second half effort
to squirm out of his grasp which could have proved costly. 6
Silvestre - It has been a long road back for the Frenchman who hasn't played
since suffering cruciate knee ligament damage at the start of the season. But
he looked surprisingly fresh and even made an important block to deny Taddei in
the second half. 7
Ferdinand - Despite needing three stitches in his foot at half-time the
centre-back looked far more solid than he had against Boro on Sunday. 8
Pique - The Spaniard produced an accomplished display alongside Ferdinand,
stepping into the considerable boots of Nemanja Vidic and was a more solid
partner for Ferdinand than O'Shea had been at the weekend. 7
Brown - He was unfortunate to concede a first-half penalty when he appeared to
take the ball rather than Roma winger Mancini. Sound performance from the
England man. 7
Carrick - Had an important job as the deepest of United's central midfielders.
His passing game was as solid as ever so did well to shield a defence that had
looked unusually shaky at the weekend. 7
Giggs - He loves to turn it on against the Italians and once again did not
disappoint. Was particularly threatening in the first half when on three
occasions he cut the Roma defence open with passes that deserved better
finishes. 8
Anderson - The Brazilian was out of sorts in the first leg in Rome but he
looked more like his usual self last night with his movement a constant threat
and his range of passing always looking likely to create something. 7
Hargreaves - Arguably his best performance in a United shirt as the England man
seemed to relish being given a more attacking role. Might have scored on two
occasions in the first half while his crosses from the right also proved
dangerous, never more so than in the second half when he laid on Tevez's
winner. 9
Park - After an impressive performance in Rome in the first leg he was once
again tireless in helping United's cause even if he lacked the threat of a
Cristiano Ronaldo. 7
Tevez - Worked tirelessly as ever up front but often looked as though he was
crying out for a Rooney or Ronaldo to partner him. But got the crucial goal his
work rate deserved to ensure there would be no jitters. 8
Subs
Rooney (for Giggs 74) - Cameo appearance but still had time to put through Park
late on. 6
O'Shea (for Carrick, 74) - Helped close out the game. 6
Neville (for Anderson, 81) - Too late to rate.
