Sir Alex Ferguson only has three recognised defenders for AC Milan’s visit
to Old Trafford in Tuesday’s Champions League semi final first leg, and may
again have to call on Darren Fletcher to play at right-back.
Rio Ferdinand (groin), Gary Neville (ankle), Nemanja Vidic (collar bone)
and Mikael Silvestre (shoulder) are all out, while Patrice Evra, who trained
away from the group on Monday, is recovering from a calf injury sustained
against Sheffield United and is likely to be on the bench.
"Patrice did some training on Monday morning," the boss said at his
pre-match press conference. "Maybe [he will play], possibly on the bench.
Wes Brown and Gabriel Heinze should form United's central defensive pairing,
while John O'Shea could switch to left-back, with Fletcher on the right.
But, despite the unfamiliarity of that back four, the United boss remains
upbeat.
"We'll have important players available for the game, so the one problem
I have is perhaps having an adequate bench. But we’re happy with the squad
available tomorrow.
'You do miss players like Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Louis Saha in big
matches, but the spirit of the team is good.”
Responsibility in particular, falls upon Brown at the heart of United's
defence, but Sir Alex feels the 27-year-old from Longsight will step up to
the challenge.
"We're OK for central defenders,” he said. “Since taking over from Vidic,
Wes has been very good. The one thing we know about Wes is that he is a
natural defender. But the big-game occasion always helps him.”
With all the changes in the back four, the experience of former Champions
League winner with Ajax, Edwin van der Sar, is amplified.
"He is vital to us,” insisted the Reds boss. “Since Edwin has joined us,
he has brought with him personality and experience. Particularly when we
were changing the team, that was very important to us.
"He's proved that again this season, where his form has been outstanding.
He has been in the Champions League and been in this position before. For
the ones in the dressing room who haven’t, that is important to them. I
think he is one of the best in the world. Gianluigi Buffon in Italy is a
marvellous goalkeeper. But, after that, Edwin is right up there.”
