Mikael Silvestre's first-half header
gave Manchester United a 1-0 win over
PSV Eindhoven in the Vodafone Cup.
It was the Premiership side's first pre-season victory and
was a welcome boost ahead of Sunday's Community Shield clash
against Arsenal.
Ruud van Nistelrooy played 45 minutes in his first game since
Euro 2004 while Diego Forlan also featured.
PSV almost equalised in the second half when Alex's stunning
free-kick crashed against the underside of the bar.
Ricardo and rising star Chris Eagles were given rare starts
by Sir Alex Ferguson.
But it was veteran Ryan Giggs who provided the 25th-minute opening
for Silvestre.
The Welshman's corner picked out the run of the Frenchman,
who rose high to power a header past Heurelho Gomes.
The match turned nasty when Eagles launched himself into Andre Ooijer,
forcing referee Matt Messias to step in.
Then Louis Saha was sent flying by Ooijer as the Frenchman
attempted to reach John O'Shea's crossfield pass.
After Giggs had curled the free-kick narrowly over,
Saha saw an excellent low shot palmed round the post by Gomes.
Substitute Alan Smith was handed his home debut,
coming on for van Nistelrooy at half-time.
But the former Leeds player ended up booting Saha in the face
while attempting an acrobatic volley from Forlan's cross.
Smith also lunged into substitute Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and then
left a foot in as he challenged Gomes.
PSV almost equalised late on when Wilfred Bouma clipped a shot
just inches past the post.
