United Reserves were on the receiving end on Thursday night when
Gabriel Agbonlahor grabbed a first-half hat-trick for title rivals
Aston Villa.
Agbonlahor, an England Under-21 international, scored in the 14th, 30th
and 42nd minutes as Rene Meulensteen's men suffered a nightmare first-half.
It could have been worse - United would have been 4-0 down if Tim Howard
hadn't made an excellent save just before the break.
At the other end, Austrian keeper Robert Olejnik performed brilliantly
to shut-out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Giuseppe Rossi as the Reds sought,
unsuccessfully, to make amends by besieging the Villa goal. Rossi also
had a goal disallowed, in the 7th minute.
Olejnik saved his best save until last, making an unbelievable stop to
prevent United's FA Youth Cup hero Fraizer Campbell from netting a
consolation goal in injury time.
On the subject of injuries, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer completed the 90 minutes
without a hitch and could soon resume his senior comeback.
