United moved seven points clear at the top of the FAPRL with a comfortable
away win at Everton.
Giuseppe Rossi was instrumental for Rene Meulensteen's side - scoring twice
- but there were also superb contributions from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and
Mark Howard.
John O'Shea also came through just over an hour's play unscathed in his
first action in over a month after breaking two ribs against Liverpool
in January.
Rossi opened the scoring after 20 minutes after a superb through-ball
from Solskjaer. The Italian shrugged off two challenges from Everton
defenders before calmly slotting past John Ruddy in the home goal.
United were fortunate to remain ahead just six minutes later as Howard
scampered to clear Paul Hopkin's effort off the line, and the Mancunian
defender had an even more telling influence early in the second-half.
As has so often been the case under Meulensteen's charge, United flew
out of the traps after the interval and had doubled their lead after
49 minutes through Howard.
In his fourth appearance since returning from cruciate knee ligament
damage, the 20-year-old nipped in ahead of everybody to poke home
Markus Neumayr's corner from close range.
Twenty minutes later Rossi grabbed his second of the night, and again
he was indebted to Solskjaer, who turned in another sharp performance.
The Norwegian striker found Michael Barnes with a brilliant through-ball
down the left, and the youngster's centre was inch-perfect for Rossi,
who had the simple task of tapping past Ruddy to bury the hosts.
Everton briefly rallied as Hopkins fired in a shot on the turn, but their
lingering hopes of an unlikely comeback were finally dashed by substitute
Chris Fagan.
The young Irishman was on hand to poke the ball home from Rossi's cross to
register his first Reserves goal six minutes from full-time.
The result puts United seven points ahead of second-placed Middlesbrough,
who make the trip to Wigan on Wednesday night.
