Reds Left Frustrated By Scrappy Draw
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's fine goal couldn't overcome Wolves as United moved
five points clear at the top of the FAPRL table despite slipping to their
first draw of the season.
Quinton Fortune provided the silver lining to the evening, coming through
his first football of the season unscathed. The South African lasted 62
minutes in his first competitive appearance since the 2005 FA Cup Final.
United started the night four points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough
with a game in hand, knowing that a win would give them real breathing space
ahead of next Tuesday's visit to the Riverside Stadium.
They signalled their intent to secure that cushion almost immediately,
taking the lead through Solskjaer after just three minutes.
Captain Markus Neumayr picked out the Norwegian striker with a low cross,
and Solskjaer worked space for the shot before drilling the ball clinically
past Wolves keeper Michael Oakes from 15 yards.
The finish was more reminiscent of Solskjaer's first-team goals over the
years, and was the latest signal that his stint in the Reserves is helping
him to rediscover both form and fitness.
United continued to make the better of the difficult, icy pitch and were
unfortunate to only go into the interval just one goal ahead.
Solskjaer, Giuseppe Rossi and Phil Bardsley all came within inches of
doubling the advantage - in particular the latter, who saw his 20-yard
half-volley deflect wide off the near post.
Rene Meulensteen's side were left to rue that profligacy when Wolves flew
out of the traps in the second half.
The visitors upped their workrate and were good value for their equaliser,
although there was more than a hint of good fortune about it.
Korean international Ki-hyeon Seol fired in a fine, deep cross to lurking
Romanian striker Vio Ganea, whose mishit volley went straight into the
ground before looping over the helpless Luke Steele.
Though the goal stung United into life and they began to probe again,
they never managed to forge a clear-cut opportunity.
Darron Gibson's thunderous 25-yard volley was goalbound until it deflected
away off Wolves defender Kevin O'Connor, and United never came any closer.
Indeed, they were eventually lucky to snatch a point.
Colin Cameron's close range effort looped up off the top of the crossbar
before, rather than drop to the waiting Seol, landing on the top of the
bar again and bouncing behind for a goal kick.
