Rossi Double Puts Reds Back On Track
United's Reserves notched their first win in five games as a quickfire
Giuseppe Rossi double saw off 10-man West Brom.
The Italian striker opened the scoring just after an hour before doubling
the lead from the penalty spot, having been brought down by Baggies keeper
John Bateman - who was sent off.
United went into the game on the back of two straight defeats, but boosted
by the return from injury of Darron Gibson and Ritchie Jones in midfield.
Fraizer Campbell also returned from suspension to partner Giuseppe Rossi
in attack, but United made a fairly tentative start to the match.
Despite a couple of half-chances for Rossi and some promising glimpses
from left-winger Jamie Mullan, Rene Meulensteen's side went into the
interval without seriously threatening the hosts.
The boggy pitch was not condusive to attractive play, and United came
out in the second-half with a more steely approach.
Their reward came on 61 minutes as Rossi ended his own four-game goal
drought.
Markus Neumayr's right-wing cross found its way through to the Italian,
who rifled home from eight yards after a scramble inside the box.
The relief sparked by Rossi's strike was reflected by his team-mates'
vociferous celebrations, and they had more cause for cheer just three
minutes later.
Chasing onto a long Danny Rose through-ball, Rossi brilliantly clipped
the ball past goalkeeper Bateman, who could do little to avoid clattering
the striker.
The inevitable red card, coupled with the fact that the hosts had no
remaining substitutions, meant that striker Rob Elvins donned Bateman's
gloves.
His first task was to pick the ball out of the net after Rossi's cool
conversion, but he wasn't tested again until injury time.
First Rossi underhit a lob when put clean through before substitute
Aaron Burns' powerful shot was brilliantly kept out by Elvins' left arm.
The result means United are now eight points clear of second placed
Middlesbrough and, more importantly, nine ahead of third-placed Aston
Villa, who have three games in hand.
