Young Reds Battered By Latics
Manchester Senior Cup
Oldham Athletic 5
Manchester United 1
Boundary Park, Oldham
A young United side endured a torrid time in their final Manchester Senior
Cup game, slipping to a huge defeat at Oldham.
Fraizer Campbell scored an early equaliser after United has slipped behind,
but the Reds had no answer to the Latics' overpowering second-half display.
Adam Griffin opened the scoring for the hosts with a long-range effort that
caught Reds keeper Tommy Lee cold, although Campbell equalised within five
minutes.
Sean Evans' corner dropped to Darron Gibson, whose shot was deflected to
Campbell and the 18-year-old forward needed no invitation to head home.
United's young side, comprised mainly of Academy players, held firm until
half-time but then found themselves behind immediately after the restart.
Chris Killen's run and cross down the right found Chris Hall, whose header
gave Jason Taylor the simple task of converting past Lee.
Sean Evans came within inches of equalising again for United, only to see
his drive superbly tipped round the post by Latics keeper Terry Smith.
United pressed for a second leveller, but ultimately succumbed to a sucker
punch. On the counter-attack, Taylor and Hall found Killen in space and the
forward lifted the ball over Lee to establish a two-goal lead.
Further goals from Hall and Killen, on 65 and 80 minutes respectively, gave
the hosts an emphatic and thoroughly deserved victory.
