United crashed out of the FA Youth Cup despite dominating their fifth
round tie against Manchester City at Eastlands.
A late Kelvin Etuhu goal accounted for Paul McGuinness' side, who almost
levelled in injury time as centre-back Ryan Shawcross flashed a header
just wide.
The defeat was harsh on a United side who started strongest and dominated
their hosts throughout the match.
Fraizer Campbell was denied an open goal when he was body checked outside
the area by City keeper Matthewson, but the referee inexplicably waved
play on.
Campbell drew a fine save from Matthewson with a fine run and snapshot
shortly before Etuhu hit City's winner.
United only half-cleared a corner to Ched Evans, whose precise pass gave
Etuhu the chance to slot past the unsighted Ron-Robert Zieler with just
five minutes remaining.
The Reds poured forward in search of an equaliser, but the clearest
opportunity fell to Shawcross, who glanced his header wide at the far
post.
United: Zieler; Gray, Lee, Cathcart, Shawcross, Rose, Mullan, Gibson,
Campbell, Hewson (Brandy 73), Evans.
Substitutes: Lea, Amos, Burns, Chester.
