United crashed out of the Lancashire Senior Cup after an uninspiring 1-0
defeat at Bolton Wanderers.
Jimmy Phillips' side booked their place in the semi-finals after a first-half
strike from captain Matt Cassidy.
Brian McClair's side struggled to forge clear-cut openings until the dying
stages of the game, when Ryan Shawcross headed the Reds' best chance over
the bar.
United enjoyed the lion's share of possession all night, but were kept at
bay by a resolute Wanderers defence.
The hosts sealed their passage through Cassidy's goal on 28 minutes. The
lively midfielder charged through the Reds defence before hammering a shot
past Tom Heaton.
The United keeper kept his side in the tie with a fine save from Scott
Jamieson's second-half free-kick, but United struggled to claw their way
back to parity.
Danny Rose saw a low shot well saved by Wanderers keeper Ali Al Habsi before
Shawcross' late header crept over the bar.
United:
Heaton, Lee, Rose, Shawcross, Lea, R Jones, Barnes, Hewson, Marsh (Fagan, 69),
Burns, Mullan.
Substitutes: Galbraith, Bryan, Zieler.

Danny Rose is delighted to have been installed as the Reserves' new captain.
The Bristol-born defender has been in excellent form since stepping up from
the youth team last season, and replaces former skipper Markus Neumayr
Danny told MUTV: "Since before I came to United, I've always been the captain
of the team I've played for.
"To be put as captain of the Reserves is a big accolade for me. I'm just
pleased that the manager recognises the qualities that I have the qualities
to be the Reserves captain."
Rose has already skippered Brian McClair's side to two league wins, and will
be hoping for further progress in the Lancashire Senior Cup against Bolton on
Wednesday night.
