Alan Smith turned in a solid display as United's Reserves started the
defence of their league title with a win over 10-man Blackburn.
The England striker, in his second competitive game since suffering a
broken leg and dislocated ankle back in February, lasted for 90 minutes
at Ewen Fields.
A solitary Phil Marsh strike was enough for the Reds second string,
who were again under the charge of Brian McClair and Jim Ryan.
Marsh tapped home the rebound after his initial penalty had been saved
by Rovers keeper Frank Fielding.
United were made to battle for the points by a strong visiting side which
included Tugay and Francis Jeffers, while the pouring rain did little to
help either team.
McClair and Ryan were also able to name a strong side, although they were
hampered at the last minute by the withdrawal of Chris Eagles, who joined
NEC Nijmegen on loan on Thursday afternoon.
Polish goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak made his first competitive appearance
since moving to Old Trafford, and turned in an extremely dominant display.
United started the game in solid fashion, and were ahead on 14 minutes as
they were awarded a penalty when Tony Kane felled Sean Evans inside the
area.
After Marsh’s eventual conversion, Rovers roared back and enjoyed a decent
amount of possession. As much as they pushed, however, they were unable to
forge any clear openings before the interval.
Their clearest chance came on 55 minutes as Jeffers met a right-wing corner
from close-range, only to see his effort turned brilliantly over the bar by
Kuszczak.
A minute later United were next to be foiled by some excellent goalkeeping,
as Fielding got down smartly to his left to turn away Sean Evans’ curled
effort.
Jeffers was red-carded on 72 minutes for lashing out at Ryan Shawcross, who
had marshalled the former £10million striker comfortably all night.
A minute after Jeffers’ moment of madness United thought they had a
clinching goal, only for Kieran Lee’s powerful effort to be ruled out
for offside.
Although United spent plenty of time camped in the Rovers half in the latter
stages, they were unable to unpick a sturdy backline and had to settle for
just the one goal victory.
United: Kuszczak, Lee, Rose, Shawcross, Gray, R Jones, Mullan (Barnes, 81),
D Jones, Marsh (Cathcart, 68), Smith, Evans.
Substitutes: Ngalulua, Heaton, Burns.
