曼聯預備隊前二輪的比賽都是以1-0小勝。
(看來沒Rossi進球數降了不少,不過才踢兩輪啦!而且這班小將都非常年輕)
United's Reserves made it two wins from two league games with a narrow
victory at Manchester City.
Phil Marsh's deflected first-half strike was enough to seal the points for
the reigning FAPRL champions.
Brian McClair's side lived dangerously at times against a physically
imposing City side, but in the end held firm for three vital points.
United survived a sluggish start and were thankful that Tom Heaton was able
to save Stephen Ireland's long-range effort.
That scare sparked McClair's side into action, however, and they began to
apply more pressure on their hosts.
Kieran Lee saw a shot well saved by Joe Hart in the City goal, while Ryan
Shawcross saw his flicked header go just past the far post.
For all their increasingly promising forays forward, however, it was a
mistake from City's Matt Mill's which led to the game's only goal.
The centre-back played a blind pass towards his own goal straight to
Marsh, who worked space for himself before unleashing a powerful left-footed
effort from 20 yards.
The strike was deflected off Garry Breen on its way past City keeper Joe
Hart, who may well have had the effort covered.
If the Blues were unfortunate to concede via a ricochet, United afforded
them a huge let-off 10 minutes later, in first-half injury-time.
Aaron Burns superbly released Sean Evans down the left, and his fine cross
was blazed over at the far post by Kieran Lee.
United continued their spell of dominance early in the second period, as Hart
twice had to be alert to deny Marsh.
First he fisted away the striker's powerful volley, then raced from his line
to pip Marsh to a terrible backpass from Breen.
City came within a whisker of equalising on 67 minutes. First Heaton did
well to save Ashley Grimes' shot with his legs, then 17-year-old centre-back
Craig Cathcartr brilliantly cleared Kelvin Etuhu's follow-up off the line.
That was City's clearest chance in a dominant spell of possession. As they
pushed for an equaliser United aimed to exploit any defensive gaps, with
Marsh spurning the clearest as he shot instead of picking out Burns.
United held firm until the final whistle, aided largely by some superb
defending. Each of the Reds' back four were immense on their way to a second
clean sheet in two league games.
United:
Heaton, Gray, Rose, Shawcross, Cathcart, R Jones (Barnes, 66), Lee, D Jones,
Burns, Marsh, Evans (Brandy, 72).
