Second half goals from Academy stars Craig Cathcart and Sam Hewson saw
United's Reserves come from behind to beat Everton and move to the top
of the FAPRL North.
The Reds trailed Kieran Agard's opener on the stroke of half-time, but U18s
captain Cathcart headed an equaliser just after the interval before Hewson
fired a priceless winner 18 minutes from full time.
United overcame The Toffeemen in their last outing just five days ago thanks
to a late Chris Fagan goal, but it was the hosts who looked the likelier
winners in the first 45 minutes.
Chris Eagles had the Reds' only first half attempt of note, firing at
straight at John Ruddy after a winding run which bypassed three defenders.
Both Agard and Dutch international Andy van der Meyde fired wide for the
hosts from promising positions, but Everton did move ahead in first half
injury time through a fine goal by Agard.
Steven Morrison whipped a superb deep cross in between United's centre
backs, and the onrushing striker planted an unstoppable header past Tom
Heaton.
Just 38 seconds into the second half, however, United drew level as Cathcart
expertly guided Eagles inswinging free kick over the stranded Ruddy.
Burns fired past the outside of the post and Hewson drew a fine save from
Ruddy, both with powerful long-range strikes, as United pressed for a second,
and it came on 72 minutes – albeit with a hint of good fortune.
Eagles found space for a shot after Eckersley's neat ball infield, but
scuffed his effort into the legs of Hewson. The midfielder managed to
control the ball before lashing a powerful shot into the roof of Ruddy's net.
Like Cathcart, it was Hewson's first goal for the Reds' second string, and
it proved to be the final noteworthy act of a hard-fought game.
Substitute Fagan almost converted a pull-back from fellow replacement Michael
Barnes in injury time, but two goals were enough to put United back ahead of
Middlesbrough at the top of the table.
