Ryan gets tough with Ryan
Ryan Shawcross was at the centre of a remarkable incident on Thursday
night when United Reserves drew 2-2 at Kettering Town.
The powerful young centre-back was withdrawn by his coach Jimmy Ryan after
clashing with Town forward Zema Abbey in the latter stages of the match. But
United declined to send on a substitute, so it was effectively a red card for
the Reds defender.
Shawcross replaced Rio Ferdinand as a sub earlier in the week when virtually
the same group of players beat Macclesfield 2-1 - with a little help from
Wayne Rooney, of course.
Two more subs from the Macc game, Danny Rose and Fraizer Campbell, put the
Reserves 2-0 up after 14 minutes at Rockingham Road.
Campbell set up Rose's 10th-minute opener with a superb through-ball and then
grabbed his second goal in four days with a curling shot past Kettering
keeper Mark Osborn.
The Conference North side instantly pulled one goal back through Andre
Boucaud, then winger Andy Hall grabbed their equaliser just two minutes after
the break.
Having been 2-0 down, Kettering might have won 4-2 had it not been for two
excellent saves by United keeper Tom Heaton, both at the expense of Rene Howe.
With thanks to Cliff Butler.
