United's Under-18s secured an impressive 3-0 win over Stoke City in front
of a healthy crowd at the Britannia Stadium.
Paul McGuinness highlighted before the game that the experience of playing
in a first-team stadium would be a good test for his young players, and
they passed it in emphatic style.
Stoke had three players in their starting line-up who have been involved
in the Potters' first-team this season. But United were still too strong
for the Midlands club.
However, it was the home team that came out of the blocks quickest. Tom
Thorley went close for Stok on three occasions in the first half, but
United struck a killer blow just before half time. Midfielder Danny
Drinkwater crossed for Norwegian youth international Magnus Eikrem to
volley home a fine strike.
After the break the game was all but put out of the Potters' reach when
Hewson struck on the hour to make it 2-0. It was a brilliant goal. Eikrem's
quick free-kick on the right wing found Hewson, who volleyed the ball first
time as the defence just stood and watched.
As Stoke made changes to try and revitalise their fortunes, Brandy raced
through the home team's defence to complete the scoring with his tenth goal
in ten games this season.
The win means McGuinness' in-form young Reds have now taken 16 points from
a possible 21 in the last seven matches.
