Level on points with the west Midlands club going into this match, United
were seeking to move clear of Wolves and climb back up the table after
defeats to Blackburn and Liverpool.
This was a match the young Reds could and should have won. “Some of the
football we played was the best of the season so far,” U18s boss Paul
McGuinness told ManUtd.com. “If our finishing had been just a bit sharper
we could have scored three or four goals.”
As it was, striker Chris Fagan got United’s only goal from the penalty
spot, but a wind-assisted Wolves free-kick meant the Reds brought home
only a point.
“In general, the performance was excellent,” added McGuinness. “We
defended well and passed the ball in the midfield very well.”
For the U18s boss this was a return to the kind of display that saw his
side take 16 points from a possible 21 between mid-September and the end
of October.
“At this level the performance, rather than the result, is everything,”
he said. “And that’s not just in the matches. In training the boys have
been very good. There is a strong unity in the squad now.”
United:
