United’s Under-18s suffered a similar fate to the first team at the
weekend as Paul McGuinness’ young side lost despite going a goal in
front against Blackburn Rovers.
The Reds got off to an unbelievably quick start with a goal after 20
seconds. From the kick-off, United won possession and Chris Fagan burst
through the Rovers defence and hit a rising shot into the corner of the net.
United created another chance four minutes later when Fagan's strike-partner
Febian Brandy raced onto a long ball over the top of the Blackburn defence,
but was denied by the goalkeeper.
Reds goalkeeper Ben Amos was called into action moments later, saving well
from Josh O'Keefe. But the Rovers forward took revenge on 21 minutes,
heading in an equaliser from a set-piece on the right.
Blackburn turned up the pressure and two minutes before the break got what
proved to be the winner. Italian striker Raffaele De Vita, usually a reserve
team player, turned well to escape his marker before lifting the ball over
Amos to make it 2-1.
The Reds had precious few second-half chances against third-placed Blackburn,
but defended well against a barage of attacks from the home team.
