United’s Under-18s lost in the FA Youth Cup final in heartbreaking fashion,
losing 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out, as Liverpool retained the trophy they won
against Manchester City last season.
Spurred on by a crowd of 24,347 at Old Trafford, the Reds battled hard for
120 minutes, losing 1-0 on the night.
But the United players can be very proud of their display over the two legs,
and indeed throughout the competition. A tenth success in this prestigious
youth tournament proved a step too far, but there is no shame for this young
team that has matured and blossomed in an impressive campaign.
Reds coach Paul McGuinness named an unchanged team from the 2-1 first-leg
victory at Anfield, still without usual Under-18s captain Craig Cathcart,
after a knee injury sustained in training cut his season short. United
started the brighter, and in winger Danny Welbeck and striker Febian Brandy
the Reds had two of the first-half’s liveliest performers.
However, older and physically stronger, Liverpool’s team contained a clutch
of players who had played in last year’s Youth Cup final. At times their
experience showed, but it was United that looked more dangerous in the final
third in the opening 45 minutes, with Fagan, Welbeck, Brandy and Hewson all
having attempts on goal.
It took Liverpool 38 minutes to register their first chance. Their wide
players, Ray Putterill and Jimmy Ryan, have pace and an ability to deliver
dangerous balls into the box. And it was from an inch-perfect Ryan centre
that striker Craig Lindfield headed narrowly over just before the break.
United began the second half in similar fashion to the first, and after
five minutes had a golden opportunity to open the scoring. Drinkwater found
Brandys run with a lofted pass and the United forward did well to escape his
marker Jay Spearing to leave him with just Roberts to beat. But his shot was
too close to the Liverpool stopper, who saved well.
Liverpool came into the game more and hit the post when Lindfield turned and
forced United stopper Ron-Robert Zieler to push his shot onto the post. In
the ascendancy, the visitors made their period of control count. After 56
minutes, Robbie Threlfall, who scored an own goal in the first leg, unleashed
a rasping left-footed drive past a stranded Zieler to make it 1-0 on the
night and 2-2 on aggregate.
United had to weather the storm as Steve Heighway’s young side grew in
confidence. Putterill went close with eight minutes of normal time remaining,
but in the absence of a winner from either side the match entered extra time.
Lindfield was again denied by the post after his angled shot beat Zieler,
while United striker Brandy had United’s best chance in extra time when his
volley from close range was stopped well by Roberts.
But there was simply no separating the two teams and a shoot-out was
required. Eikrem missed United's first penalty, before Fagan, Chester and
Galbraith all converted. But Liverpool scored in each of their four
spot-kicks, leaving Reds skipper Hewson needing to find the net to keep
United in the match. Unfortunately he struck his shot over the bar, and
victory was Liverpool's.
