United's Under-18s progressed to the FA Youth Cup fifth round with an
impressive 2-0 win over Southampton at Hyde's Ewen Fields stadium on
Wednesday night.
Sam Hewson and Danny Drinkwater struck first-half goals to earn the Reds
another home tie, this time against Crystal Palace, who beat Plymouth
Argyle in their fourth round match.
United were the better team throughout and played some good football
against a strong Saints side, that could have included 17-year-old
Gareth Bale, supposedly a January transfer target for the Reds.
Sam Hewson put United in front on 23 minutes. Striker Febian Brandy had
a shot saved by Southampton goalkeeper Matej Rondos and Hewson had the
simple task of tapping the ball home.
Chris Fagan missed a golden opportunity moments later when he could, and
undoubtedly should, have connected with Brandy's cross. But the second
goal finally arrived just before half time when Drinkwater converted
Richard Eckersley's cross.
In the second half Southampton Jamie White forced a good save from Ben
Amos and the visitors went close on numerous other occasions. All in all,
it was a deserved victory and the Reds keep marching on in the tournament.
