United's Under-18s are through to the FA Youth Cup sixth round after
beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at Ewen Fields.
Paul McGuinness' side will face either Barnsley or Birmingham City in
the quarter finals - they play their fifth round clash on Wednesday night.
And should United reach the semi finals, a tie against either Arsenal or
Bristol, Cardiff or Sunderland awaits.
Midfielder Sam Hewson gave the Reds the lead against Palace on 36 minutes,
hitting a strong low shot past Eagles goalkeeper Martin Pearson after good
work from Danny Welbeck on the wing.
Febian Brandy and Welbeck had chances to extend United's lead before the
break, but it remained 1-0 at half time. After the interval Palace came out
of the blocks fastest, and Reds keeper Ben Amos was called into action on
numerous occasions.
But McGuinness' young side secured a quarter final place on 71 minutes when
Pearson messed up a through ball, which let Brandy in. The Reds forward saw
his shot saved, but the linesman ruled that it had gone over the line.
The result continues an impressive run in the prestigious competition this
season, scoring seven goals in three matches without conceding at all. In the
third round in December, United knocked out Scunthorpe with a comprehensive
3-0 victory. Then, in the fourth round, the Reds overcame a highly-regarded
Southampton team 2-0 to set up Tuesday night's clash with Palace.
The Reds are now two rounds away from the final and, despite there being
plenty of hard work ahead, dreaming of a tenth success in the tournament.
