Visiting Old Trafford, signing and staying
When I arrived at Old Trafford I was very nervous, not about being a football
player at that magnificent club – fortunately, I had already overcome that
phase – but because my English very poor.
I signed the contract, convinced that I would be released on loan to Sporting
and stay there for another year. "So, now you go back to Lisbon, you are going
to learn English and when you return to stay everything will be stabilized and
it will be great," I told myself. Alex Ferguson probably guessed my thoughts
because he immediately said: "We are interested in you, but for this year, so
you are going to stay." I was surprised and a little worried.
"But I came without luggage. I did not bring anything, not even clothes!" I
replied. "No problem," he said. "Tomorrow you will train and then you will
go to Portugal to get your things."
I was introduced to each of the players at United, I saw the stadium, the
club facilities, the training ground. "Hey, I am going to play here. That
is incredible!" I kept repeating to myself. I was thrilled. That feeling
of being "insignificant" that I had endured when arriving at Sporting, had
vanished on this journey to Manchester, I was more mature. I cannot say that
I was a man at the age of 18, but I was more grown up. I was calmer, I
believed in myself. In Manchester I didn’t go through half of what I
experienced at Sporting. I had definitely overcome my lack of confidence and
my fear of failing.
I started training on the day after I arrived at Manchester. I was not a
stranger, because some days previously my new colleagues had faced me as
opponents – it appears that some of them had even advised on my acquisition
after the game with Sporting, obviously without knowing that everything had
already been arranged – and everything went smoothly.
Three days later United were playing against Bolton, and so I thought that
this would be the moment for me to return to Portugal, to pack my things and
finally move to Manchester. I was wrong again. "I am calling you up," Alex
Ferguson said. "Already?!" I said surprised. But it was true.
Old Trafford is magnificent. I had never seen anything so impressive. The sun
was shining on that magical day, the stands were filled with 70,000 fervent
supporters, and there was an atmosphere both chilling and thrilling. I started
the game sitting on the bench. I watched the match filled with enthusiasm, even
though a little nervous. The first half ended, we all went to the dressing
room to hear the coach and came back for the second half. Fifteen minutes
later, Alex Ferguson turned to me and said: "Warm up." I got up and started
doing some physical exercises. All the supporters applauded, as if they were
welcoming me, and my heart started beating faster and faster.
There were 30 minutes left to the end of the match when I heard the words:
"Ronaldo, you are going on." I could not think straight. I just wanted to
take my tracksuit off quickly. I was going to play in attack on the right
wing. "Okay," I replied. The supporters gave a standing ovation. I was so
moved and filled with enthusiasm by that whole atmosphere and the kindness
shown on my debut, in short, I did not want to wake up from that wonderful
dream. The first time I touched the ball things went very well. I felt even
more confident. I scored a penalty. The game ended but I wanted it to
continue. I was considered the best player on the field and I received my
first bottle of Champagne, the "trophy" that is offered in England to the
man of the match. I was dreaming. At the age of 17 I had my professional
debut at Sporting and by the age of 18 I was transferred to Manchester
United. Impossible? More than possible, it became a reality. And it all
went so quickly that I almost had no time to breathe or to understand what
had just happened.

My friend Rooney
After the match with England, I was criticized and whistled at. It is not
very pleasant.
But, to tell the truth, it did me some good. With this I grew wiser and it
ended up by turning a problem into something that helped me to mature as a
man and a football player. Whenever we get overconfident we stop listening
to criticism about ourselves.
Today I do feel good, the team is okay and I now understand better what
happened. People say we make mistakes due to our age. I do not agree. There
are players of 25, 26 and even 30 who still make mistakes. This has nothing
to do with age or experience. At least in what concerns me, things do not
work this way. Sometimes we do things we were not supposed to do because
something unexpected occurred, or because we were not prepared for a certain
situation. But this can also happen to a football player in the later stages
of his career. All it takes is to be distracted and not having the time to
think. This can only be understood by those who are in this field, by those
who are or were football players.
I progressed and matured a lot, of that I am sure. I did have some difficult
moments whenever they whistled at me, but I stood up to it. I believe I did
very well indeed. And I intend to go on like this, always evolving. To some
people I would like only to say one thing more on this matter: I know that my
friend Rooney completely understands everything I just said, even better than
I. Furthermore, I insist that Rooney is a good friend, by whose side it is a
pleasure and an honor to play, and he and I exchanged SMS messages just after
"that" game with England, as well as the next day. We immediately cleared
up everything between us, even though there was not much to be sorted. We are
team-mates and we have a perfect understanding. The problem is I ended up as
the scapegoat for the English defeat.
England were eliminated by Portugal, which was a situation the England did
not like at all, and I was involved in it, but I was only defending my County.
They had chosen me to be the star of a movie with a totally false plot. If
things were not as I have described them, then Rooney would not be my friend
as he is today. I did exactly what anyone would have done.
