Thousands of letters answered
Manchester United receives thousands of letters addressed to me. At a certain
point decided that it should be me that should take care of all that mail
instead leaving it to the club.
At home I gave one or two awards as best player resulting from a vote among
the supporters. I feel I have the moral obligation to thank them. So to do
this I now answer all these letters sent to me. I receive all kinds of
requests, from autographs, to photos, shirts, birthday cards, or even money,
believe it or not. Inside one of the countless boxes where that huge amount
of correspondence is stored, a while ago I found a request for the financing
of a snail breeding nursery. Someone else wished to decorate their living
room with a certain painting and considered the possibility of asking me to
pay for this pretension and even sent me her bank account number, and this
item is not even the most striking one. People ask me for all kinds of things
and they enclose bank statements, account numbers, copies of tax details with
respective identification number, and even identity cards. Some go even
further and send me copies of their mortgage and/or monthly car payments.
But I also receive presents from some fans who want to be different and from
others who do have some sense of humor. I have already been sent caricatures,
almost all of them drawn by children, albums with photos or even paintings of
me. However, there is a certain Portuguese man sent me a shirt from deserves
a special mention for the originality of his initiative. This Portuguese man
sent me a shirt from the Portuguese national football team and, unlike my
initial assumption, the idea was not to have me autograph it and to send it
back to him but it was really a birthday gift to me and I received it in
January of this year. "I imagine everyone asks you for shirts with my name
on it with a number of my own choice. Just to be different," he explained in
the letter he sent me. I thought it was great. The shirt, which is now in my
house in Manchester, has the number 28 on it and the name S. Ferreira on the
back which, going by the content of the letter must be the name of this
Portuguese emigrant. I thought it was so funny that, without being asked, I
sent him a note of thanks as well as my autograph, which I took great
pleasure in signing.
I reserve one day per week to take care of correspondence, which arrives from
all over the World. Some people send me self-addressed and stamped envelopes,
but this does not happen with all of them. For instance, in one month I have
spent more than two thousand pounds on envelopes and stamps! I sign all the
letters, one by one, in my own handwriting. It may be tiring, but this is a
way I can repay the supporters for all their support and adoration. My cousin
Nuno and my friend Rogerio open the letters, get everything ready and then I
sign. To answer the fans is one of my properties, it is something I want to
do. I have that obligation and will keep on doing it. I feel even more
motivated and proud.
Something identical happens with the requests for shirts. I have never
charged one penny for shirt I have offered and I've lost count of how
many I have already given away. And I buy them myself. It is obvious I
cannot comply with all the requests, particularly the more extravagant
ones. As I used to say, the man that pleased everyone was born and died
on the very same day. Not even God, and certainly even less, Crisitano
Ronaldo. Here common sense must rule.

It doesn't take a lot to make others happy
I like to make other people happy. In the very same way I feel that I have
the duty of answering, in my own handwriting, the letters that are sent to
me by the supporters, I also consider that it does not take much to grant
some moments of happiness to those on whom life has played some tricks.
This is why I participate, whenever I can, in charity events. Not out of
obligation, but because I want to and I thin I should have that social and
moral attitude.
Why not offer one day that is different and happy to those who need something
good in their life? At least, I try to relive them of some suffering they may
be going through. I think that all those receiving adoration from the public
should act like this. It is a pay back. It is a way of showing love to our
neighbor, to help them believe that they can solve their own problems that
they can overcome their difficulties, no matter how bad they may seem. I feel
this need to make others happy, by signing autograph, giving a photo,
returning a friendly word.
As long as I have some time available, I do not refuse an autograph, no
matter under what circumstances, although I do have a trick. When I am
surrounded by lots of people I use the initials, CR7 and when there are fewer
requests I do my regular signature, but I never complain about it. Sometimes
our presence is all it takes to give someone hope. The sick children and the
orphans, as well as the elderly particularly concern me. It worries me that
people are dying from hunger. That is why I engage myself, whenever I can, in
charity events.
During the Christmas holidays Manchester United organizes visits to
hospitals, so that children can enjoy something different. We bring them
presents, we talk to them, play with them, bring some joy into their lives.
We are also filled with the emotion of those moments. It is so easy for us
to contribute to these small/big moments…
Some time ago, a little girl of 12 or 13 visited Manchester United. She had
cancer and knew she was going to die. But she wanted to meet the players. Me
included. When Bart (a United director) introduced me I was unable to ignore
that sparkle in her eyes. She gave me her hand. I kissed her on the cheek and
gave her a big strong hug. She knew what was going to happen to her, but at
that moment she was happy, as she had been able to make one of her dreams
come true. And she kept on smiling. These are the things that affect me the
most, leaving deep scares in me. I said goodbye to her with a broken heart,
but returned her happy smile. Sometime later, I was turning over the pages of
the club magazine and I stopped at one particular page. "In memory of …" I
had just found the news of the little girl’s death. My eyes filled with
tears. Life can be so unfair, I thought. Unfortunately, these cases continue
to happen and I have already dealt with two or three other identical cases.
These are traumatic experiences, but at the same time comforting ones because
we know we ended up doing some good to someone who was ill and had a short
life expectancy. And it comforts us somehow. Not for very long, because it is
sad to be in the presence of someone that knows they are going to die.
