Jorge Sampaio，一個給我留下更深印象的人
Alberto Joao Jardim 是我很樂意去向人介紹的人之一。而 Jorge Sampaop 是另一
個，他是葡萄牙 1996-2006 年期間的總統。
當葡萄牙國家隊與04年歐洲杯冠軍失之交臂的時候，葡萄牙的總統向國家隊的所有成
員表示了敬意。我們被邀請去共進晚餐，當他邀請我坐在他旁邊時，我當時正坐在別的桌
子。我承認我沒想到他會那麼做，但正是這樣我開始更深的瞭解他。在長時間的交談後，
我知道我不僅是和一個非常聰明的人在交談，還是和一個對體育文化非常瞭解的人，這讓
我感到吃驚。我很高興能與他見面，我也把 Jorge Sampaio 當作給我留下最深印象的名
人之一。
與 Alberto Joao Jardim 和 Jorge Sampaio 見面，意味著我有機會能和兩個我非常
欽佩的德高望重的人建立個人友誼。除了他們我還想跟誰見面？我好幾次問過自己這個問
題，而我的回答可能聽起來有點古怪，但那是完全真實的：我想和發明飛機的那個人見面
。顯然我也知道這個願望是不可能實現的。一方面，因為他已經不再人世了，另一方面，
我也讀到一些關於到底是誰發明飛機的爭執。有人說是巴西人 Santos Dumon，也有人說
是沒過的懷特兄弟。不管是誰，我很想與那個人見面，問他是怎麼會第一個想到去模仿鳥
類的。
當我還是個孩子的時候，當我一聽到天空中那些美麗的機器的引擎所發出的聲音，我
就會抬頭，雙眼望著天空。而現在，由於工程技術的不斷進步，很顯然無法跟那些第一次
造出的那些飛機相比。
我第一坐飛機旅行的時候感覺很興奮。我當時12歲，在母親的陪同下，豐沙爾和里斯
本這段旅程一直在我的腦海裡徘徊。首先是因為好奇心——瞭解，看看和學習當今存在的
東西的願望。我懷著極高的熱情開始了這次旅行，急切想知道這是怎麼操作的。當飛機開
始起飛的時候我把我小小的頭貼在飛機的窗戶上，但是我的眼睛只能看到外面的東西，我
很想從高空看我那美麗的小島，尋找我的家，記下每個細節。然而，隨著飛機越飛越高，
我的熱情一點一點消失了。我開始哭了，我很想回家，所有的好奇心都不見了。我的雙眼
只能看到我哥哥們的形象，他們一會兒前還在機場跟我告別。他們都帶著太陽眼鏡，鏡片
是暗色的，但是他們的眼淚還是不禁流了下來。飛機越飛越高，而我所能回想起的只有那
一刻。我哭得越厲害，事情也越糟糕，我開始覺得我的耳朵有點痛。後來我甚至不哭了，
但是我還是覺得很不舒服。對於第一次做飛機的經歷，我覺得很不開心。然而，那只會發
生在那一次，現在每次坐飛機旅行，我都會很享受。

假期
由於一些廣告合同的原因，我經常長途旅行。那些都是令人難忘的時刻，不僅因為過
程中感到快樂，而且這讓我瞭解到其他文化。我很喜歡亞洲，特別是印度尼西亞的巴里島
，我在那裡有機會享受了幾天身心的完全放鬆。
比如說在亞齊省，我留意到那裡的生活節奏，那的確讓我很驚訝。從我房間的窗口望
出去，我看到了與平常匆忙的生活節奏所不一樣的景色。在街道上沒有勞勞碌碌的人和車
輛。當我去到當地的公園，看到那裡簡直是人山人海，男人，女人，小孩子，各個年齡的
人在練習瑜伽。如果當時不是清晨6點的話，我就不會覺得奇怪。而那裡的夜晚並不完全
是夜晚，至少不比世界其他地方的晚上黑暗。當我們親眼看到黃昏的晚霞如期而至，我們
感覺時間靜止了一般。在接觸過中國和日本的社會和文化之後，我認為這兩個都是極具魅
力的國家。
我喜歡以旅遊去瞭解一個陌生的地方，我喜歡觀察和發現其他民主的風俗習慣：他們
怎麼樣，他們會做什麼，他們如何生活。在與其他球隊比賽的之後，我都會從中他們身上
總結出一些重要的特徵。一直以來，我都認為這些旅途經歷有助於豐富我的人生經驗和學
識。無論是因為比賽還是度假，我都能有所收穫。
一般人都希望在經受了一年工作壓力之後能得到片刻的安閒，而我所希望的有點不一
樣。當我選擇度假目的地時，我要求的重點是找到一個寧靜的地方，而酒店房間有水療按
摩，還能提供必備的練習器械。對於一名運動員來說，即使在度假，體能鍛煉也是不可或
缺的。
我喜歡陽光，所以對我來說，假期的意義就等同於陽光與海灘。我喜歡細沙留在我的
手，腳，甚至全身的感覺。我喜歡躺在毛巾上，身心完全放鬆，把所有的事情都拋諸腦後
。我喜歡潛水和游泳。我很享受落日的晚霞，和注視著大海的時刻，這樣我會感到身心都
釋放，毫無壓力。看著大海我會想起馬德拉，我的家，豐沙爾港口來回的船隻。在放假期
間，我仍然會和朋友們玩一些兒時的遊戲，感覺像是回到了童年的時光。陪伴我的總是那
幾個朋友：Ze、Nuno，有時候是兄弟或者堂兄妹，還有一些 Gestifute 的人。我朋友並
不多，但我很自豪他們都是值得信賴的朋友。當我們在一起的時候，我們就像是一群沒人
看管的小孩子，盡情地玩樂。生活中最簡單的東西往往是最美好的，我們需要好好珍惜。
為了盡情享受每個假期，每一次度假都是不一樣的，所以很難要選出哪一個地方是最
好。我在馬略卡島的帕爾瑪和伊比沙島度過了一段時間，也許那是迄今為止我覺得比較好
的時光之一。我們擁抱陽光與大海，還駕船遊玩。這實在好極了。雖然我並不能肯定地說
這就是最好的地方。
休假的時候和親朋好友一起度過的每一刻都是妙不可言的，尤其是在馬德拉，這是我
常去的一個度假聖地。比如說去年夏季，我大部分假期都在那裡度過，每年我都會在那裡
呆上至少五，六天。那裡是我的家。
不久以前我到迪拜旅遊，很多人認為那是沙漠中的紐約，也許這話說的是真的。三年
前與曼聯的隊友休假，已經去過那裡一次，但這次我在一位老朋友的陪同下，有機會在那
裡享受了五天徹底放鬆的旅程。我喜歡這樣。迪拜豐富多彩的建築藝術給我留下深刻的印
象，這次我可以更加好地欣賞。人們生活的質量，文化的多樣性，還有這個伊斯蘭國家的
美態都讓我流連忘返。迪拜氣候宜人，陽光充足，全年高溫，清澈的海水在海灘反射出耀
眼的光。我還去到了的沙漠，在那裡，我第一次騎駱駝。這非常有趣，儘管我並不熱衷嘗
試這項活動，主要是因為感覺有點不太舒服。但當置身於廣袤的沙漠之中，極目遠眺，映
入眼簾的除了酒店，就是滿眼黃沙。這樣的場景所給我帶來的視覺衝擊是前所未有的。在
安靜的夜晚望著滿天星斗的低語，那種美麗是難以想像的。也是我們以往在喧囂的大城市
所感受不到的。迪拜可以說是其中一個我最瞭解的地方之一。
在未來，我希望到邁阿密，紐約和澳大利亞旅遊。澳大利亞對我來說有特別的意義。
我的外祖父在那裡住了很長的時間，而我卻一直沒有機會去那裡看望他。我記得我的外祖
父過去一直強烈質疑我父母讓我去里斯本競技的決定。「讓一個孩子獨自去到葡萄牙大陸
？絕對不可能！」他抱怨和害怕有什麼不好的事情發生在我身上。我知道如今外祖父一定
為我感到自豪。

Jorge Sampaio, the man who left a bigger impression
Alberto Joao Jardim was one of the personalities I had the pleasure of being
introduced to. Jorge Sampaop, who was president of the Portuguese republic
between 1996 and 2006, was another.
As soon as the Portuguese national football team was knocked out of the
European Championship of 2004, the presidency of the Portuguese Republic
paid homage to all the members of the committee of the national football
team, competition finalists. During the dinner to which we were invited,
I was sitting on a different table, when he took the initiative of calling
me over to sit near him. I admit I did not expect him to do that, but in
this way I got to know him better. After having had a long conversation,
I knew that not only had I been with a naturally intelligent person –
hardly news to me – but also somebody who had a higher than average taken
on sports culture – and this indeed surprised me. I was very pleased to
meet him, and I place Jorge Sampaio in the gallery of personalities who
impressed me the most.
Meeting Alberto Joao Jardim and Jorge Sampaio meant the possibility of
establishing personal contact with two personalities of undeniable standing,
whom I admire very much. Who besides them would I like to meet? I have been
asked that question a few times, and my reply may seem a little odd, but is
absolutely true: I would like to meet the person who invented the airplane.
Obviously I know it is not possible for that wish to come true. On the one
hand, because he is no longer among the living, and on the other hand, I
have read that doubts exist about who accomplished it. Some say it was the
Brazilian Santos Dumont, and others insist that it was the Wright brothers,
from the U.S.A. Whoever it was, I would love to have met the man and talked
to him about how he felt for having been the first to imitate birds.
When I was a child, I often raised my eyes towards the sky as soon as I
heard the sound of the motors of these beautiful monsters of the air, which
nowadays, thanks to the constant progress of engineering, naturally cannot
be compared to those which made those first flights.
The moment I experienced the sensations of my first airplane trip was
exciting. I was 12 then. In the company of my mother, the journey between
Funchal and Lisbon aroused in me, above all, enormous curiosity – the wish
to know, to see or to learn exists even today. I began the trip with great
enthusiasm, eager to learn how everything worked. With my small head glued to
the windowpane when the airplane started to gain altitude, I had eyes only
for the outside, curious to see my beautiful island from above, looking for
my house, memorizing every detail. However, my enthusiasm vanished as the
plane gained more and more altitude. I started to cry, longing for my family.
All curiosity was gone. My eyes could only see the image of my brothers, who
had said goodbye to me at the airport a short while before. They were all
wearing sunglasses, with very dark lenses, but not even that prevented tears
from escaping their eyes. The airplane kept gaining height and all I could
recall was that moment. I wept even more and to make matters worse, I started
to feel terrible pain in my ears. I got so sick that I even threw up. I did
not enjoy my first experience among the clouds. However, it would be the only
time it happened, and today I take pleasure in travelling by airplane.

Vacation
Many of the trips I have made have been long-distance, which can mostly be
explained by the various publicity contracts I sign.
They were all unforgettable moments, not only for the pleasure I have
admittedly felt while working on those campaigns, but also because they
allow me to get to know other cultures. I was delighted with Asia,
especially Bali, Indonesia, where I had the opportunity to enjoy a
few days in absolutely rest and tranquility.
The pace of life I observed, in Banda Aceh, for instance, surprised me.
From my room window I watched an unusual rush. This was not traffic, or
people on the streets walking to work. What I was seeing went on in the
local parks, which were literally filled with men, women and children,
of all ages, practicing yoga. I would not have thought it abnormal if it
were not… six in the morning. But also there the night is not totally
night; at least it is not as dark as in other parts of the world. We have
the feeling that time stops, and that we are witnessing a permanent sunset.
China and Japan were other countries I felt attracted to, after having had
contact with characteristics of their society and civilization.
I love to travel, getting to know new places, I like to watch and discover
the customs of other people: how they are, what they do, how they live.
I always end up drawing important elements from these experiences with other
races. Invariably, I am left with the feeling that they have contributed a
little more towards my intellectual enrichment. This not only occurs when I
travel due to reasons linked to my professional activities, but also when
the pretext is simply to enjoy a few days' vacation.
My wishes are not very different from those common to all the people who
crave a few quiet hours after a year of intense working stress. At the
moment I choose the destination, however, I have a major concern: finding
a peaceful place and a hotel room with a SPA that can offer the necessary
conditions to a person who needs to coordinate leisure with some exercise;
indispensable to an athlete, even during his vacations.
I love the sun, therefore, for me, vacation is synonymous with beach. I love
to feel the sand on my hands, my feet, and even on my body. I like to lay on
the towel, totally relaxed and not thinking about anything at all. I like to
dive in the sea and I love to swim. I enjoy watching the sunset, and
contemplating the sea, for that is how I feel truly relaxed, without any
kind of pressure. Looking at the sea reminds me of Madeira, my home, the
activity of boats in Funchal harbor. The fun and games that I still play
with my friends during vacations also take me back to my childhood. I am
usually accompanied by the same friends: Ze, Nuno, sometimes my brother
and cousins, and some people from Gestifute. I do not have many friends,
but I pride myself on them being firm friends. When we are all together,
we look like children without a care in the world, having fun and happy
doing something as simple as playing in the water. Often the simplest
things in life are also the most beautiful. We need to value them.
Every vacation I take is special, for enjoy it to the maximum, and it is
always different, there-fore it is impossible for me to choose one over the
other. The period I spent in Palma de Mallorca, Formentera, and Ibiza (Spain)
was maybe one of the merrier I have had up to now. We had sun, sea, and we
sailed. It was really great. Whether it was the best or not, I cannot say in
all honesty.
With my family and my friends, every moment of rest has been fantastic,
especially in Madeira, which is obviously one of my frequent destinations.
Last summer, for instance, I spent most of my holidays there, and I always
reserve at least five or six days, every year, to be there. That is my home.
Not very long ago, I visited Dubai, considered by many to be the New York of
the desert, and it may probably be true. I had already been there three years
before, in a break with Manchester United, but this time I had the opportunity
of spending five days of total relaxation, in the company of my long-time
friends. I loved it. Dubai's architectural richness, which I could appreciate
better this time, impressed me. The population's quality of living, cultural
diversity and the beauty of this Islamic country makes me want to repeat the
experience.
The climate is magnificent – the sunshine and the high temperatures are
constant throughout the year –and the coast presents a dazzling sea of
crystal clear waters. I was also in the desert, where, for the first time,
I rode a camel. It was amusing, even though I did not get too enthusiastic
about it, mainly for being somewhat uncomfortable. But the mere fact of being
in the middle of a vast expanse of sand, with nothing around but a hotel, was
a different vision from anything I had yet seen. Listening to the silence and
contemplating millions of stars in the black sky was an image of rare beauty,
not comparable to the restlessness of large urban centers we are all used to.
Dubai was truly one of the most complete places I have had the opportunity of
knowing.
In the future, I hope to visit Miami, New York and Australia. Australia has
a special meaning for me. That is where my maternal grandfather has been
living for many years, and I have never had the opportunity to visit him.
That grandfather, as I recall, had serious doubts about my parents deciding
to let me go to Sporting. "The boy, is he going alone to the Portuguese
mainland? That can't be!" he complained, fearful of what could happen to me.
I know that today he bursts with pride for his grandson.
