David Beckham believes he has been used as a "political pawn" in the Barcelona presidential elections. Manchester United today revealed they would accept an offer for the England captain from Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta if the Catalan lawyer wins the club's elections on Sunday. But a spokesman for SFX, Beckham's management company, told PA Sport this afternoon: "David is very disappointed and surprised to learn of this statement and feels that he has been used as a political pawn in the Barcelona presidential elections. "David's advisors have no plans to meet Mr Laporta or his representatives." Who knows where Becks will be playing next season by why not get the Three Lions' skipper's England shirt from Kitbag Laporta's camp were not too perturbed by the comments made on Beckham's behalf by SFX and insist a deal can be done. Sandro Rosell, the chief negotiator for Laporta who would become Barcelona's sporting director if his colleague wins the election, told PA International: "Once we start talking with him (Beckham), I feel that there won't be any problems." The statement from Beckham's representatives came shortly after Laporta professed he would do his utmost to help the deal go through - even if he is not elected. Laporta said: "When David Beckham arrives from holiday, we will begin negotiations with him. If I am not elected president, I would turn over the transfer to the man who does win." Laporta trails Lluis Bassat in the latest polls but he has reduced the gap from 29% to 3% since he committed himself to pursuing Beckham. Another of the candidates, Martinez Rovira, dismissed the potential acquisition of Beckham as mere publicity. "Beckham is a media signing and more of a dream than reality. He is a player we would never try to sign," Rovira said on Spanish radio. "He crosses well but we need someone to score the goals. We want to sign a number nine. "Beckham makes a lot of news off the pitch but we're not interested in appearing in gossip columns." United announced their conditional acceptance of Barca's bid in a statement on the club's official website. A statement from the club read: "Manchester United confirms that club officials have met Joan Laporta, the leading candidate for the presidency of Barcelona. "These meetings have resulted in an offer being made for the transfer of David Beckham to Barcelona. "This offer is subject to a number of conditions and critically to both Mr Laporta being elected president on Sunday, 15 June and Barcelona subsequently reaching agreement with David Beckham on his personal contract. "Manchester United confirms that in the event that all of the conditions are fulfilled then the offer would be acceptable." Beckham's future has been the subject of intense speculation as far back as February. He was hit in the face by a boot kicked by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after an FA Cup defeat against Arsenal and his pride was further hurt when he was put on the bench for the crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg tie against Real Madrid at Old Trafford. Beckham came off the bench to score twice in a 4-3 win which was not enough to prevent an aggregate defeat to the then European champions and the rumour mill went into overdrive with reports circulating that he would join the Spanish giants. Real distanced themselves from the stories, with first a statement on the club's official website and then an emphatic denial by club president Florentino Perez designed to end the speculation. But Beckham's future at Old Trafford still seemed uncertain and in the last month Barcelona and AC Milan came into the frame for his signature. AC Milan owner-president Silvio Berlusconi poured cold water on the move yesterday but Barca presidential candidate Laporta has based his election campaign on signing Beckham. It was a tactic used by Real president Perez, who promised to sign Portuguese star Luis Figo if elected or he would buy season tickets for all the club members if he failed. His popularity soared, and if the same tactic works for Laporta, Beckham could be on his way to Catalonia. Even if all the conditions of the bid are met to Manchester United's satisfaction, the Spanish club have still to convince Beckham that it would be the right career move for him and it appears from SFX's statement that he is unhappy at the way the whole affair has been handled by both clubs. Barca have endured a torrid campaign in La Liga and have applied for entry to this summer's Intertoto Cup after missing out on a place in both the Champions League and the UEFA Cup. Whether Beckham would be prepared to accept - at best - a UEFA Cup place when he has been used to playing Champions League football, remains to be seen. Reaching agreement over personal terms and image rights may also take time - at 28, Beckham is in his prime and will want to make sure the move is right for him financially as well as being a good career move. MUTV are changing their schedules tonight in anticipation of a welter of reaction from United fans. Former United favourite Denis Irwin, a friend of Beckham's, will be on the channel from 6.15pm as part of the Beckham special. 原來皇馬主席也用過這一招~ "如果買不到Figo,我會買季票給所有球會的會員!" 而Laporta的承諾是什麼呢? 好奇中~ (不過這個承諾讓他跟Bassat的選票從29%的差距變成3%,厲害呀!買不到的話~ 我想整個Barca球迷會圍堵他!) -- YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE THE REDS ★ ● ● ◢█◣◢█◣◢█◣◢█◣R◢█◣◢█◣◢█◣◢█◣ ★ █ █ ★ THE REDS YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 219.68.68.142 ※ 編輯: mcowen 來自: 219.68.68.142 (06/11 04:29)
