BOSTON -- There is still no deal in the Daisuke Matsuzaka watch in
California, and Red Sox officials said late Tuesday night that they are
leaving Wednesday with or without an agreement.
"We're going back to Boston [on Wednesday]," Red Sox chairman Tom Werner told
The Associated Press.
Werner's comments came after two different sessions Tuesday with Matsuzaka's
agent, Scott Boras, at his Newport Beach office failed to produce an
agreement.
Facing a midnight ET Thursday deadline for negotiating a deal with the
Japanese ace right-hander, Werner, team president Larry Lucchino and general
manager Theo Epstein spent all day trying to come to terms.
According to The AP, the Red Sox contingent left the building where the
offices are located shortly before 7 p.m. ET, returning about four hours
later and stayed for 40 minutes before leaving again.
Trying to precipitate a deal, Red Sox principal owner John Henry offered the
services of his private jet Monday to fly Lucchino and Epstein to California
for the meetings. The Red Sox are hoping to have Matsuzaka on board Wednesday
when they leave so he can have a physical back in Boston before the deadline.
"We're leaving for Boston tomorrow," Epstein said.
The Red Sox GM was also asked if there would be additional talks, responding,
"That's up to Matsuzaka."
Boras said the decision whether Matsuzaka will join the Red Sox or return to
Japan will be made by his client, who was MVP of the inaugural World Baseball
Classic last March.
"I'll have something for you maybe later in the day," Boras said when he left
his office.
It was unclear whether there would be additional talks later Tuesday night.
The Red Sox won exclusive negotiating rights with the right-hander with a
record $51.11 million bid through the Japanese posting system. Matsuzaka's
Japanese team, the Seibu Lions, will receive that money if he signs with
Boston. If he doesn't, the Red Sox walk away without owing anything.
Boras would not let Matsuzaka board the plane to take a physical in Boston
without an agreement.
"It's here in Southern California and it will leave on Wednesday morning,"
Epstein said. "We hope Matsuzaka-san will be on it so that we can complete
the physical in Boston in time to get a contract done."
Matsuzaka posted a 108-60 record during his time in Japan, with a 2.95 ERA
and 1,355 strikeouts in 204 games.
Matsuzaka, who isn't eligible for free agency until after the 2008 season,
can be put up for bid again next November, should a deal with the Red Sox not
be consummated.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox plan to tender 2007 contracts to all 19 unsigned
players on their Major League roster. Teams had until midnight Tuesday to
tender their unsigned players or they become free agents.
