Notes: Howard was named the national player of the year by Fox, Basketball
Digest and College Insider. Also named first team All-American by the National
Association of Basketball Coaches. He was a finalist for the John R. Wooden and
Naismith Awards and was a unanimous selection for 2003 ACC Player of the Year
honors -- the first player to earn unanimous honors since David Thompson in
1975.
Wake's first All-American and first ACC Player of the Year since Tim Duncan in
1997, Howard was the leading vote-getter for the ACC All-Defense Team. Joins
Shane Battier as the only players in the history of the ACC to accumulate 1,000
points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, 200 steals, 100 blocked shots and 100
three-point field goals.
Howard leaves Wake ranked second in career steals (215), third in games started
, fifth in blocked shots, sixth in double-doubles (22), sixth in games played,
seventh in rebounding, eighth in three-point attempts, 10th in scoring, and
10th in three-point field goals made. As a senior, Howard led the ACC in
scoring and ranked in the top 10 in seven other statistical categories.
Howard led Wake Forest to the 2002-03 ACC regular season championship -- its
first outright title in 41 years. Led Wake Forest to a 87-44 record during his
four-year career and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
