[外電] Two Specific Mavs-Wizards Trade Proposals

 We’re being peppered with questions from national media members and Mavs
fans alike about our story regarding the Mavs’ talks with Washington
(involving Caron Butler, Mike Miller, Brendan Haywood, Josh Howard and Wizards
’ tax relief plus cap room).
   The most asked questions about the Mavs’ proposals and options: Is that
offering to the Wizards of “Escape From Cap Hell’’ really possible? How?
What are the dollars and what is the sense? Can DallasBasketball.com name
names?
    We combine some information from our conversations with NBA sources with
our own numbers-crunching for what we think is a very detailed update –
 Trade Idea 1 and Trade Idea 2 -- of what can happen:
    We've noted earlier that if the Mavs are to get Brendan Haywood and Caron
Butler (or Mike Miller) from Washington, neither of whom has a nasty
contract, the most effective approach would probably be to create a trade
that gets the Wizards out of paying tax this season. We have the specifics
the Mavs have to work with, along with some specific ideas that fit.

   The Wizards’ cap this season has been about $78.67M, which is well above
the tax-free limit of $69.92M for 2009-10. But Washington's tax-applicable
salary has been lowered by the league-imposed season-ending suspensions given
to Arenas and Crittenton in January. The reduction is 1/220th of the player's
annual salary for each game missed (including playoffs), which lowers Arenas'
tax-related salary by $3.68M and Crittenton's by $0.255M. The net result
leaves the Wiz with a tax number of about $74.74M, and leaves them less than
$4.82M from having a payroll that's tax-free.

   We are told that Washington’s preference is for someone (the Mavs) to
take DeShawn Stevenson as part of any deal, in light of his ineffectiveness
and his $4M+ option for next season. Here are two ideas that help the Mavs
get players they might want, while get the Wizards tax-free, with one idea
including Stevenson and one idea without involving him.

   We will postulate that the wing player for the Mavs to acquire is Caron
Butler, since we suspect Washington will be more interested in trading his
contract with another year remaining than Miller's expiring. (Again, know
that while virtually no media outlets have touched on Miller’s name, we
continue to report that Butler and Miller are both on Dallas’ long-form wish
list.) But the current salaries for Butler and Miller are essentially
identical, so these ideas will work equally well with either player in
lowering the Wizards tax number.

Trade Idea 1

   This begins with: Dallas trades … Howard and Barea (both expiring, but
with an option for another year if the Wiz decide they prefer to keep them) …
 for Butler (another year left) and Haywood (expiring). That lowers the Wiz
tax number by about $3.23M.

   Then the Mavs use their $2.9M Trade Exception to take an additional player
from the Wizards whose salary is between $1.58M and $3M (Blatche, Oberto,
Young, McGee), which according to our calculations eliminates the Wizards’
 tax completely and lowers their payroll next season to about $40M, depending
on which player is also included. Those four players have varying
attractiveness to each team as well as future obligations. But we suspect
Blatche and McGee are unavailable, so if we’re the Mavs maybe we try to get
the out-of-favor youngster Young, who is a wing who showed promise as a
rookie but has taken a step or three backwards this year and who has another
year left on his contract.

Trade Idea 2

   This begins with: Dallas trades ... Howard, Gooden and a small-salary
player (such as Ross, Singleton or Thomas) … for Butler, Haywood, and
Stevenson. That lowers the Wiz tax number by $3.45M or more, depending on
which player the Mavs include.

   Then the Mavs use their $2.9M Trade Exception to take an additional player
from the Wizards whose salary is between $1.4M and $3M (Blatche, Oberto,
Young, McGee). With Gooden leaving in this trade, and perhaps Singleton or
Thomas as well, there could be some usefulness in taking Oberto's expiring
contract.

General Thoughts

   On both ideas, there are multiple negotiating points and issues to
consider. Do the Mavs prefer Butler or Miller? Do they give up Gooden or
Barea, and for the rest of this season which can they most afford to do
without? Which small-salary player do the Mavs add, and which do the Wiz
include? Do the Mavs add a pick or anything else? Do the Wiz? How much added
salary in total will Cuban absorb, in light of the fact that he'll be paying
tax on the increase?

   We know what the Mavs want, need and get here: A solid center with Bird
rights (so they can re-sign him in the summer if they wish) plus help at the
wing to replace and hopefully upgrade from Howard.

   But regardless of the details, the essence of these concepts has the
Wizards:

   *Lowering their payroll
   *No longer paying tax
   *Gaining another $4-5M by getting a slice of the collected tax payments
from other teams
   *Lowering their payroll considerably for next season where they can add an
over-MLE free agent if they wish.
   Those are some of the details of what the Mavs are pitching to Washington.
None of this means Dallas won't be outbid. But if Washington wants out of Cap
Hell? These are the exact details of how it can happen.
