We’ve told you about Mavs considerations Drew Gooden (no) and Big Z (no).
While Dallas still has hopes that other veteran NBA bigs might get buyouts,
Marc Stein is reporting that the Mavs are ready to make an immediate move for
short-term help.

    So who is Dwayne Jones? And what are the Austin Toros?





    *Dwayne Jones is tearing up the D-League, where he stars for the Austin
Toros. He’s a 6-11, 250-pound center who is averaging 16.8 points (on
61-percent shooting) and 15.4 boards, plus two blocks per game.

    He is the best center in the D-League.



   *There is room on Dallas’ roster for an extra body, certainly under the
terms of a 10-day contract (even if they end up signing 2-guard Von Wafer to
his own 10-day contract).



    *There is also an immediate need. The Lakers are coming to town on
Wednesday. And while Eddie Najera has done yeoman work as Brendan Haywood’s
backup at center, LA is talented, long and deep. One more big body could help.

    Remember what Rick Carlisle said last night, laughing as he pointed out
that Najera “is the second-talest guy on our team. … well, the tallest guy
on our bench. Matt Carroll is the second-tallest.’’



    *Erick Dampier (dislocated finger) will be back in less than three weeks.
Tim Thomas (personal leave) will be back eventually, hopefully. But heck,
maybe all Jones needs is another chance.

    He’s bounced around professional basketball for quite a while since
being a part of St. Joseph’s undefeated club. (College teammates? Jameer
Nelson and Delonte West!) He’s just 26 – maybe he’s about to come into his
own? – but he’s got 80 NBA games on his resume (with Boston, Cleveland and
Charlotte).



    *In a recent Toros game, he totaled 26 points and 26 rebounds -- 12 of
those on offense. If the Mavs sign him, they won’t ask him to do any of
those things. Set a screen. Grab a rebound and hand the ball to Kidd. Foul
somebody.

    Really, it’ll take quite a bit of faith to ever actually play him in
front of Najera, to ever actually ask him to go collect some fouls against
Andrew Byrum.

    But if you are gonna grab a body, this is a sensible one to grab.
