10. The Chalupa Incident (2001)
A skirmish broke out on the court because the Cavaliers took offense to the
Mavericks' trying to break 100 points, which would have given fans coupons
for free chalupas. Cuban, whose instincts were to protect 250-pound Gary
Trent from 195-pound Wesley Person, was fined $10,000 for rushing onto the
court.
9. When Cuban Vs. Nellie Really Started (2003)
One of the only things Cuban and ex-Mavs coach/GM Don Nelson can agree on is
that their relationship took a permanent turn for the worse during the 2003
Western Conference finals. They disagreed on whether Dirk Nowitzki should
play with a knee injury. Cuban, armed with team doctors' assurances, argued
Nowitzki should play, but Nelson refused to use the forward.
8. Goodbye, Steve Nash (2004)
Angry fans wanted answers when Steve Nash departed for the desert. After the
All-Star guard signed with Phoenix in free agency, Cuban cranked out a
4,400-word blog post explaining "all the logical, illogical, emotional and
financial scenarios" the Mavs explored before declining to match the Suns'
offer. After Nash won two MVP awards, it looked like Cuban's logic was flawed.
7. Courting The Cubs (2007-08)
Cuban offered the highest bid ($1.3 billion) when the Chicago Cubs were on
the market, because he wanted to own a sports icon. "There's no way Bud
[Selig] and the owners are going to let that happen," a baseball source told
the Chicago Sun-Times. "Zero chance." Cuban didn't even make the cut to three
finalists.
6. NBA Finals Drama (2006)
After the Mavs took a 2-0 lead, Cuban vowed to wear a Speedo while accepting
the championship trophy. He never got the chance. The Mavs lost the next four
games in a series remembered for controversial calls, which resulted in some
epic Cuban rants that cost him $250,000 in fines.
5. Ripping The River Walk (2006)
On a radio show during the 2006 Western Conference semifinals, Cuban stoked
the flames of the Interstate 35 rivalry by referring to San Antonio's prized
tourist attraction as the "ugly-ass, muddy-watered thing they call a River
Walk." This came after he called Spurs fans the "rudest" in the NBA on his
blog.
4. April Fools' Joke (2003)
Cuban had some fun with his reputation for squabbling with referees on April
Fools' Day in 2003. Cuban got into a shoving match with an actor hired to
play a referee during a timeout in the second quarter of a game against the
Hornets. Nobody was fooled more than assistant coach Del Harris, who screamed
at Cuban before realizing it was a gag.
3. Jason Kidd Trade (2008)
The Mavericks hadn't been major players in the trade market for a few years
before they pulled off one of the biggest blockbuster deals of the decade,
acquiring Jason Kidd in an eight-player deal that sent Devin Harris to New
Jersey. The deal cost Cuban, who had adamantly denied rumors of discussions
between the Mavs and Nets, about $17 million in additional salary and luxury
tax.
2. 'Dancing With The Stars' (2007)
Cuban became a crossover celebrity during his five-week stint on the popular
ABC reality show. Cuban, whose personality and willingness to beg for votes
made him a fan favorite, proudly notes that he lasted longer than boxer Floyd
"Pretty Boy" Mayweather. Not bad for a then-49-year-old who was months
removed from hip-replacement surgery.
1.The Dairy Queen Experience (2002)
After saying he wouldn't hire NBA head of officiating Ed Rush to manage a
Dairy Queen in the midst of a rant that earned a $500,000 fine, Cuban found
out just how difficult it is to run the ice cream shop. He accepted a
challenge from Dairy Queen and worked a day at a Coppell, Texas, store,
serving Blizzards and Belt Busters to a line that reached as long as 1,000
people.
