Hey NBA, why not the Jet?
By Jeff Caplan / Jan 27 9:43 PM
That's right, you could do worse. So why not throw Mavericks guard Jason
Terry a bone and put him in the Three-Point Shootout on his home floor?
What's the harm? He actually wants to be in it. Isn't that in itself a breath
of fresh air in an age where athletes are begging out of stuff like this (ask
Roger Goodell)? If you had ideas of inviting Jason Kidd for a feel-good
storyline, forget it. Kidd said Wednesday that he'll be working on his golf
game in the Arizona sun.
Terry is a fan favorite and he's involved in the community (you know, kind of
like those commercials, the NBA Cares, or something like that). He even
started up his own coat drive to deliver a little warmth to the homeless
during the winter (and it's been darn cold in North Texas). He never turns
down an autograph and he truly cherishes his opportunity to play in the NBA.
Sure, there's the occasional fist to an opponent's groin, but that can happen
to any of us in the heat of battle. Terry's good far outweighs any negative.
The guy went to Phoenix last year just to soak in the All-Star atmosphere
(and maybe a party or two). But, come on, he says he hasn't missed an
All-Star Game, either on TV or in person since he was like 4. (Have you seen
these All-Star games over the last decade? Not exactly must-see TV.)
OK, so Terry isn't having the greatest shooting season of his life. At 35.4
percent from downtown he's way down the league list (like 80th), but so what?
Have you seen defending champion Deaquan Cook's percentage this season (try
28.8 percent, and you have to invite him to defend his title)? Terry has shot
better than 40 percent in three seasons and his 38.2-percent career mark is
nothing to sneeze at (I've seen plenty of opposing coaches wince when Terry
swishes a 3-ball late in the shot clock.)
All-Star Weekend is in North Texas for the first time since 1986. Dirk
Nowitzki will be the only Mavs player selected to play in the actual game and
no other Dallas player is slated to take part in Friday's or Saturday's
events.
So why not throw Jason Terry a bone and let him spread his wings for the home
fans?
Dirk
