Mavericks' Marion has dialed back game for NBA's top prize – a championship

MINNEAPOLIS – Shawn Marion is a proud basketball player who feels he is still
in the prime of his career.

In respect of Sunday's Oscars, let's put this in Hollywood perspective. Marion
does not feel like he is an 11.5-point, 6.5-rebound supporting actor.

Yet, that's what the numbers say this season, and it's why the Mavericks' small
forward feels conflicted. Marion loves winning. And he's done everything this
season to that end.

Marion's also sacrificed as much as any other Maverick, maybe more.

"You got to sacrifice certain things to get that ultimate goal, and that's a
ring, the hardware," Marion said. "Once you get that hardware, nobody can say
anything to you. That's what I want my legacy to be. I want that ring."

And that's why Marion doesn't grouse. He knows he could still approach the
20-and-10 beast he was with the Phoenix Suns. He's 31. He's in the middle of
his career. Last season, he had the misfortune of playing for two teams –
 Toronto and Miami – that didn't help him build any value in his career.

over this season and the next four.

The good news is that, as Mavericks continue to land on the injury report,
Marion is getting more chances to contribute offensively. And over the last
three games, he's delivered, averaging 15.7 points and shooting 22-of-33 from
the field.

as filling up the box score. It's something he knows he can still do. And it's
a hardship dealing with the fact that he can't always do everything he's
capable of.

A lot of what Marion is doing this season is under-appreciated because it's at
the defensive end. He often gets asked to guard the opposition's primary
scorer. That he's not called on very often offensively is tough, he said.

"Especially if somebody's really going at you, and you don't get the chance to
do the same," he said.

the chance to do that. But that's what you sacrifice. And you got to deal with
it. When you get that W, all the other stuff means nothing."

That keeps him going. The Mavericks are growing in stature among the Western
Conference elite. "We do have a chance," Marion said.

Jason Kidd is the leader of this team. And he knows how much Marion has given
up. But Kidd and his teammates expect nothing else.

"You look at all championship teams, they had guys who sacrificed," Kidd said.
"There's always guys who could do more stat-wise. But at a certain age, stats
become secondary. Wins become the main factor in the equation.

"Dirk [Nowitzki] could come out and shoot 30 times a night and just worry about
his stats. But he accepts the double-team and makes the pass. If your best
player is willing to sacrifice, everybody else has to.

"It can be tough. But there are going to be nights or a week or two that you're

through you. And so we all can say, 'Hey, we know you can do that. Thanks for
carrying us for the week, and it may be somebody else's turn to go.' "

With Jason Terry out, the Mavericks need more from Marion. And it looks like he
still has the ability to get it done.

That led Nowitzki to make the ultimate proclamation.

"We're deeper than the team that went to the Finals," he said, when asked to
compare these Mavericks to the 2006 team.

There's only one problem, he added.

"The league's also better. The top teams are better. The Lakers have three or
four all-stars on their team. The league is a beast."
