Shawn Marion had a novel concept on how the Mavericks could get some of their
karma back.
"Buckle down and stop some people," he said.
Sorry. The Mavericks aren't interested in stopping anything these days.
And it won't take them long to figure out that they are destined for disaster
in the playoffs with this sort of defense. This is ridiculous.
During their three-game winning streak, the Mavericks held Golden State,
Denver and Memphis to a combined 38.1 percent shooting.
In the other 13 games since March 3, Dallas has allowed opponents to shoot
47.7 percent or better 10 times.
As coach Rick Carlisle would say, that's losing basketball. Two plays in the
third quarter defined this bogus defense. Both involved offensive rebounds,
one by point guard Russell Westbrook, for easy second-chance points.
Those kinds of easy baskets doomed the Mavericks. And that will continue to
be their fatal flaw to the bitter end if the intensity and the attention to
detail defensively do not improve.
On the bright side, continued play like this will mean a quick end to this
for fans – probably before the end of April in the first round.
