These aren't your same, old, soft Mavericks. Coach Rick Carlisle thought the most redeeming talent in the dog-ugly win over the Blazers was the way the Mavericks held their composure and didn't let bad officiating calls rattle them. "Every foul was a hard foul, and that's what playoff basketball is all about," owner Mark Cuban said. "That's what we were talking about in the locker room and that's what we got." These Mavericks are tougher than they used to be for several reasons. They got bigger and badder with the trade for Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson. They also got new guys like Eddie Najera and Shawn Marion who have the respect of opponents – and the refs. The Portland game wasn't necessarily the kind of contest the Mavericks will see all the time in the playoffs. But there will be some like it. To know that they can hit the curveball, so to speak, is crucial to their confidence going forward. A Mavericks team better equipped to handle the Kenyon Martins and Carlos Boozers of the world is a sure-fire upgrade over last season.
