 SACRAMENTO – Dirk Nowitzki shot 17 free throws against Portland on Friday
night and made them all.

It shouldn't be surprising, since he never misses from the stripe these days.

His streak is at 55 in a row, five shy of his team record and more than
halfway to the NBA record of 97 consecutive freebies made by Micheal Williams
in 1993.


It's a handy weapon to have heading into the playoffs. And it's not just
quality at the line, but quantity, too. Late in the season, Nowitzki's still
relying on his fall-back jumper, but he's also using fakes and going to the
basket to create contact.

The 83-77 meat-grinding win over Portland on Friday was a prime example.

"It was a battle," Nowitzki said. "I felt like they got into me, and they
forced me into a couple shots that I didn't like when we played them a couple
weeks ago.

"I said to myself coming in that I wanted to play off the dribble a little
more with quick drives, and I was able to attack. Last time, they were really
sitting on my [jump shot], and they took me out of my face-up game, so I
tried to attack more off the dribble, and I was able to get to the line. I
haven't shot 17 free throws in a long time."

Well, actually it was only six games ago when he made 16 of 17 against
Denver. That was the last time he clanked one.

The good news for the Mavericks is Nowitzki appears to be hitting his best
stride with the playoffs fast approaching. He poured in 40 points to salvage
what was otherwise an ugly and brutally physical (without many whistles) game
against the Blazers.

As Jason Kidd said, Nowitzki isn't settling for the jump shot. He's forcing
the action and making the defense run the risk of fouling him.

The Mavericks are grateful to have Nowitzki's free throw shooting as a
weapon, but they also are a superstitious lot.

"I'm not going to talk about it," owner Mark Cuban said, "because it might
jinx us."

Nowitzki loves this time of year. He believes it embodies everything the NBA
stands for, and that this is when you find out who's really got the goods
when it comes to playing this game at its highest level.

Every little breakthrough is meaningful at this time of the season, which is
why Nowitzki was glad to see the Mavericks beat the Blazers after three
earlier losses. Portland was the only team the Mavericks hadn't beaten before
Friday.

"We struggled with this team all season," Nowitzki said. "They're long and
physical, and they have big shot-makers. They're a very, very good team.
They're not a team you want to see in the playoffs. But if you look at all
the teams down there, you don't want to see anybody. It's going to be tough
no matter who you see."

A vote for Evans: Rick Carlisle is no dummy. He was asked before Saturday's
game who would get his vote in what is a very contentious rookie of the year
race.

"If I was voting, I'd have to put a lot of thought on it," he said. "But my
thought right now is that [Sacramento guard Tyreke] Evans is probably the
front-runner. I don't want to get him mad at me."

Evans, Golden State's Stephen Curry and Milwaukee's Brandon Jennings are
getting near-equal publicity for the award.

Briefly: Shawn Marion sat out again Saturday at Sacramento to give his left
oblique more time to heal. Marion has said he will be ready for the playoffs
that start next weekend. ... The Mavericks' divisional title is their third
in franchise history. The others were in 1987 and 2007.
