http://tinyurl.com/2d9wt2l The Mavericks didn't bring Dominique Jones in for a workout leading up to the NBA draft, but they did interview him at the pre-draft camp in Chicago. Something the 6-4 guard from South Florida said caught the ear of coach Rick Carlisle. "He [said] he thought he was a cross between Dwyane Wade and Rodney Stuckey," Carlisle said. "That sounded pretty good to me." Indeed, a cross between Wade and anybody is pretty appetizing, particularly to a team like the Mavericks who are starved for the sort of player who can penetrate and score. No, the Mavericks are not getting the next Wade. At least, it's not likely Jones is going to be a clone of the Miami All-Star. But Detroit's Stuckey wouldn't be all bad. What the Mavericks know for sure is that they bought their way into the first round of the draft Thursday night to get a strong-bodied shooting guard who is much more of a scorer than a shooter. They purchased the No. 25 overall pick from Memphis after Jones fell through the first round and was still on the board when the Grizzlies were set to pick. The cost was $3 million, the maximum that can be paid in a trade. The Grizzlies had two other first-round picks and were eager to unload at least one of them. What they are getting is a player who is strong and isn't afraid to show it. "I have a strong body," Jones said Thursday night. "I love it [drawing contact] because everybody else doesn't." Team president Donnie Nelson said he feels Jones is the sort of player who should be able to contribute as a rookie. Interestingly, 25 is the same pick they used on Roddy Beaubois last season. "We feel like we have two young guards that are going to make a nice backcourt tandem for the future," Nelson said. "Dominique has an NBA-ready body, and he's a little like Jerry Stackhouse in that he loves the contact." That much was evidenced by how often Jones went to the free throw line last season as a junior. He averaged nearly nine attempts per game. "Dominique is a guy we had as a top-three [shooting] guard in the draft," Carlisle said. "We like his toughness and his ability to score." One of the keys to Jones' success in college was his ability to get to the free throw line. Jones will attend the Las Vegas summer league starting July 9. He'll be there with Beaubois, and Carlisle said he didn't consider the drafting of Jones to have any impact on Beaubois. Beaubois played shooting guard and point guard last season but is expected to concentrate mostly on point guard in the summer league and when he plays for France in the World Championships. As for any competition between the two guards, it was lost on Jones. When asked what he knew of Beaubois, he said: "Who?" The Mavericks also traded their No. 50 pick in the second round, shipping it to Toronto for a 2013 second-round pick and cash considerations. The pick was Solomon Alabi from Florida State.
