Mavs Shopping Marion

When the Dallas Mavericks signed Shawn Marion to a five-year deal worth
roughly $40 million last summer it was dubbed as the final piece to the Mavs'
championship puzzle. Marion's run-and-gun style would perfectly complement
head coach Rick Carlisle's up-tempo offense as initiated by floor general
Jason Kidd, and together with Dirk Nowitzki he would give Dallas their own
Big Three. It made sense to fans at the time. After all, Marion certainly
helped the Phoenix Suns run up the score on the Mavericks often enough in
postseason play.

Unfortunately, the move didn't work out as expected. The lesson learned by
the Toronto Raptors and the Miami HEAT - that Marion is no longer the
above-the-rim, electrifying player he once was - slowly sank in for Carlisle,
as well. Gone was his funky but effective three-point shot, missed dunks and
lay-ups replaced those highlight reel slams, and by the end of the season the
team has actually acquired his replacement - Caron Butler - via trade. It
comes as no surprise, then, that we're being told by multiple teams that
they've taken calls from the Mavericks gauging interest in Marion.

It's a hard sell, and teams we've talked to said they didn't even have
passing interest in Marion. His long-term deal is the primary repellant, but
the fact that he just recorded his worst season since he was a rookie didn't
help. Marion managed just 12.0 points per game for the second consecutive
season, but grabbed a career-low 6.4 rebounds per game, shot just 16% from
three, and often sat on the bench during crucial moments in games -
especially during the playoffs. Based on what we've seen over the last couple
of seasons, Shawn Marion simply isn't an impact player any more.

That doesn't mean the Mavericks won't be able to trade him, it just means
they're going to have to put together a very impressive package around him,
probably starting with the instantly-expiring contract of Erick Dampier. The
receiving team could create roughly $13 million in cap space by simply
terminating Dampier's contract on arrival. Dampier could then return to
Dallas and finish his career as a back-up center under a veteran's minimum
contract, possibly backing up Shaquille O'Neal. We've been reporting for
several weeks that Shaq will likely land in Dallas this summer, and ESPN has
joined that refrain.

It still seems pretty unlikely that a team would be willing to take on
Marion's contract, but as we've seen, no contract is untradeable. Add enough
value to the deal and someone will decide that they have the right mix of
players in place to take advantage of whatever Marion has left in the tank.

The Mavericks have also been rumored to be interested in moving Caron Butler,
a much easier sell. Butler is still a top-notch player and he's entering into
a contract year. The Mavs would obviously prefer to move Marion and replace
him with a two-guard, but it remains to be seen whether or not they can find
a team willing to help them accomplish that goal.
