Donnie Nelson: Dominique Jones gives Mavericks' backcourt a strong one-two

Donnie Nelson, general manager of the Dallas Mavericks , spoke on the Ben &
Skin show on Friday to discuss the results of the 2010 NBA draft and buying
the rights to Dominique Jones from the Memphis Grizzlies. Here are some
highlights:

Will Rick Carlisle actually play Dominique Jones as a rookie?
Very few 50-plus team wins play rookies, let’s face it. And the fact that
he [Carlisle] threw out Roddy in playoff situations…there’s not a lot of
guys that would have done that. Now, this kid comes in and he’s got a ready
made body. Roddy came in and he had all the cat-quickness and the big upside
but he’s a little frail, a little thin. This kid comes in with a body you
can just really throw out there right away and his ability to take it to the
rack…not to mention rebound. He passes a little bit; you might be able to
get away with a little spot point-guard with him, bringing the ball up and
making some decisions. He’s the only player in the NCAA this year to average
20 points, six rebounds and three assists. So that tells you just a little
bit of everything.

What special skills does Jones possess that allows him to be both a
high-scorer as well as dish out assists without committing lots of turnovers?
When you draft, you draft on upside as well. And when a guy sees the court…
when you go through film and digest those myriads of reel, you see if a guy
has the vision; you see if he’s got the propensity to get in there and find
people. And he does. What we’re hoping here is for a little of the
old-fashioned Joe Dumars: plays a little two, plays a little one, gives us
some flexibility in the backcourt. And then when we go against some of the
bigger guards that we have to deal with out here, Deron Williams, our local
product here that’s an All-Star now, if Roddy might be a little bit too thin
or he’s getting posted up, we switch gears and we put Dominique on him. So
it gives us some flexibility and the body types of Roddy and Dominique kind
of enhance each other as well.

night. So that tells you the kind of respect that the league has for that
young man and he’s not going anywhere cause we love him.

What are the reasons for the Mavericks trading away their 50th pick, Solomon
Alabi, for cash considerations and a second-round pick in the 2011 draft
instead of keeping him?
So, the thinking there is that a middle second-round center, all those guys
are projects. There’s not many centers that kick in before the age of 25 to
28. So, instead of addressing our front line with a second-round pick, we’re
going to do that with veteran guys that know how to win playoff games. The
upside and the nurturing process, plus the lack of flexibility in the future
was part of that whole decision making. The future second-round pick isn’t
going to be a huge piece but it could be a piece of a deal that was valuable
to us.
