    Even two years ago, as Avery Johnson was leaving Dallas, it is a move we’
ve anticipated, in part because the biggest Mavs “name’’ to attend Avery’
s March 2008 farewell press conference was the loyal Popeye Jones.
   And now Popeye’s loyalty – and his skills as a basketball teacher –get
rewarded: This morning, Jones tells DallasBasketball.com that his move to
join Avery as an assistant coach is official.
    “It’s a done deal,’’ Popeye tells us in his first interview as he
makes the transition. “I just agreed.’’
  Popeye says he will miss the family atmosphere that is a part of his time
in Dallas.

  "I came to the Mavs as a team that just had a disappointing loss in the
Finals, but I was very blessed to be brought into a winning franchise as a
coach,'' Jones says. "My four years with the Mavs were great. I learned a lot
about coaching and I made some great relationships here. It's a franchise
that I will always hold close to my heart.''

   Popeye means that in terms of both his coaching and playing career.

   "They gave me a chance to prove that I could play in this league,'' he
says. "They also gave me a chance to prove that I could coach. Maybe one day
I could come back and be the head coach of the Mavs!''
   Jones, 41, played for Dallas for three seasons in the ‘90’s (in 1995-96
he averaged 11.3 points and 10.8 rebounds and in one game collected 28
rebounds). He re-joined the team for the 2002-03 season.

  Popeye was technically a “development coach’’ with the Mavs, but he will
move up the bench in New Jersey. During his four years in Dallas, he’s been
credited with being a “big-man’’ teacher who worked with youngsters like
Brandon Bass.
 "My first job in New Jersey will be all about helping Avery in building a
winner,'' Jones says. "It will be exciting to help bring a franchise from the
bottom to the top. I look forward to the challenge.''
