 Roddy Beaubois isn't even a month into his NBA career and he's already a
regular on the random, nightly top-10 highlight shows.

OK, maybe not a regular. But he's been on a few already, and figures to make
a few more because of a play the Mavericks don't have to call or make up a
fancy name for.

The lob pass from point guard Jason Kidd to Beaubois has become a useful tool
for the Mavericks. They have run it on the first play of at least two games
that Beaubois has started. Against Milwaukee on Monday, they ran it after a
timeout late in the second quarter and it worked perfectly to trigger an 11-2
Mavericks surge to finish the half with a 12-point lead.

Opponents haven't figured it out yet, and there's a reason. They don't know
when it's coming because there are no hand signals or voice commands from
coach Rick Carlisle or Kidd.

"We call it after a timeout or at the start of a quarter," Beaubois said. "We
don't have to say anything."

That would seem to be a dead giveaway, but even if defenders know it's
coming, it's hard to stop because of Dirk Nowitzki. He's the pick-setter at
the top of the key after Beaubois gives the ball to Kidd and starts his
circuitous route to the far side of the basket, where he takes off after Kidd
has released the lob pass.

Defenses do not leave Nowitzki when he sets a pick. That frees Beaubois for a
clear run at the weak side of the basket.

"All you have to do is have somebody who can throw a decent pass," Kidd says.

He's been known to do that a time or 10,000 in his career. Kidd and Richard
Jefferson used to make a living off the lob passes when they were at New
Jersey.

"It's a great weapon if you've got a guy who can go up and get it like Roddy
can," Kidd said.

Nowitzki says all he has to do on the play is stand there and let Kidd and
Beaubois do all the work. But it's not that easy.

Or maybe it is, with Kidd running the show.

"It's definitely good for Roddy that we have J-Kidd," Nowitzki said. "He
makes the game easy for a lot of guys around him."

It helps that the lob play is constantly getting tweaked and refined. The
angles may change a bit from game to game. But until opponents figure out a
way to stop it, the Mavericks will keep breaking it out when they feel the
time is right.
