 The question to Rick Carlisle drew a long, thoughtful pause.

He was being asked how to describe Kris Humphries' game on the basketball
court.

Clearly, there wasn't an obvious answer. And then, Carlisle came up with
perhaps the perfect, if not the most mainstream, response.

"He's sort of like a construction worker with Sunday School clothes on,"
Carlisle said. "He's a dirty-work guy. But he's got some very good skill
aspects to his game, too."

Thank goodness he added that explainer after the Sunday School reference.

The thing with Humphries, the 6-8 forward who has had several large nights,
including Friday against Sacramento, is that he went through a period when he
couldn't get on the court much because Erick Dampier and Shawn Marion were
healthy.

Then, he produced a long stretch of solid games, including his 15 points and
five rebounds against the Kings.

So how does Humphries, the Sunday Schooler with the hard hat, view himself?

"I always like to say I do a little bit of everything," Humphries said
Saturday. "I don't know. A construction worker dressed up for Sunday School?
I don't know.

"For me, the reality is that everyone always says guys off the bench have to
be blue-collar guys; however, you want to translate that to basketball. You
got to be willing to do the things that guys can't necessarily do if they
play 40 minutes a night. A lot of us take that attitude that we're going to
dive for balls and do whatever we got to do."

Carlisle is thankful to have Humphries, who has been invaluable with the
injuries to Tim Thomas, Dampier and Marion. He has given the Mavericks
exactly what they need from a player who has to come off the bench and, if
needed, get down and dirty.

And that little hiccup when he missed the San Antonio game because of a
coach's decision is long behind him.

"He's done a much better job the last seven or eight games engaging himself
immediately when he comes into the game and playing with full physical
force," Carlisle said. "That means sprinting the floor and putting his body
on people and pursuing the ball. The first four or five games, there were
times when he was a little slow to get cranked up into games, and he's done a
really good job of correcting that."

Humphries has gone a long way toward proving he's a key piece of the
Mavericks' puzzle. He's averaged 7.6 points and 5.4 rebounds in five games.

"With Damp being out, it brings other guys into the equation," Carlisle said.
"Humphries has to play well for us. Thomas is back in there now playing two
or three positions. We need everybody."

Humphries, who is in his fifth season since coming out of Minnesota, said
he's figured out the secret to success.

Just run, baby.

"The thing is, we're pushing it on offense and the last few games I've been a
guy who can beat my guy down the floor," he said. "Whether I get the layup or
not, somebody else has to guard me."

And that helps add some Sunday School clothes to the hard hat Humphries
always wears.
