J.J. Barea was asked what aspect of playing defense gives him the most
trouble.
Is it the post-ups of bigger guards who try to rise over him and take easy,
close-in jumpers? Or is it the rock-like screens he has to fight through on
pick-and-rolls?
"Everything," Barea said. "They always try to post me up. And a couple times,
on pick-and-rolls, I was late switching, so I was holding, trying to do
anything, and they got me a couple times for fouls.
"It's a workout for me. But I'm going to keep doing it. They give you six
fouls, so you might as well use them."
Barea will never be known for his defensive skills. But it's the attitude
that he takes toward them that epitomizes how he has become a valued member
of coach Rick Carlisle's rotation.
Barea can function well as the point guard on the floor. Against the Suns on
Tuesday, he started at shooting guard. He's equally adept at starting, coming
off the bench, handling the ball or shooting it.
At just under 6-0, he has carved a niche, which is not easy to do for someone
of his stature.
"J.J. is such a perfect fit for us," president of basketball operations
Donnie Nelson said. "What J.J. has done here is nothing short of
overachieving in a significant way.
"When he got here, we thought we were getting a really nice third backup who
could take care of the ball. But he has taken his game to a whole different
level. He's got such a big heart. It doesn't matter how tall you are if you
got a heart as big as J.J.'s. You want him out there."
Barea is a breath of fresh air in many ways. When asked if he is OK with his
different roles, he said: "Starting's great. I'm not going to lie. I like it.
It's better than coming off the bench. But I like that Coach does different
things, too. You just have to be ready to do anything."
And, yes, that includes defense. In the third quarter against Phoenix, Barea
picked up his fourth foul and headed to the bench. He'd been run off picks
and posted up and bounced around like he was the steel marble in a pinball
machine.
But he kept fighting.
"He's a tough little guy, tougher than you think," Dirk Nowitzki said. "What
he's good at, because he's pretty quick, is getting in position and taking
charges. He can battle down there. But obviously some nights we're trying to
help him when they're posting him or lobbing it over him. It's a team defense
out there. There's no one guy on an island.
"When he first got here, with his size, I don't think a lot of guys thought
he could make it. But he's worked hard, and it's paid off."
Extra work: Jason Terry and Quinton Ross worked overtime Wednesday for
different reasons.
Terry shot at least 100 extra 3-pointers, moving around the horn five shots
at a time. Presumably, that was a reaction to 1-of-5 shooting from beyond the
arc Tuesday against Phoenix.
Ross, meanwhile, had a long three-on-three run Wednesday and looks to be on
the cusp of returning to active duty. He's missed eight games with lower-back
tightness.
Money matters: The Mavericks were estimated by Forbes magazine to have a net
asset value of $446 million, making them the seventh-most valuable team in
the NBA.
The Los Angeles Lakers, at $607 million, passed New York ($586 million) for
top worth among the 30 NBA franchises.
The Mavericks, according to Forbes, were the only franchise among the top-10
most valuable NBA teams to see its operating income drop. It went down more
than 17 percent, according to the magazine's research.
Howard update: Josh Howard came out of Tuesday's game in relatively good
shape. He probably will play one of the two back-to-back games Friday at
Miami and Saturday against Charlotte at American Airlines Center.
He probably won't be in the starting lineup for a while.
"We're going to play that by ear," Carlisle said. "There's no set schedule
for getting him back as a starter. If you start, you get an extra dose of
minutes just because there's a nonstop first six minutes of a half. There's
no timeouts, and minutes get eaten up real quick.
"We don't want to put him in that position again. We'll go game-to-game and
we'll see where we are with it."
Jet多投了至少100顆三分球
他對他在太陽比賽投五中一相當不滿意
另外Josh Howard回來了
Carlisle說他們還要觀察Josh的情況
所以他最近應該不會回到先發
Josh在接下來的B2B可能會打一場休一場
